‘Walmarts of the world will be fine,’ small businesses won't: Mark Tepper

Strategic Wealth Partners President and CEO Mark Tepper on how coronavirus restrictions impact the economy and what to look for in the markets.

Major retailer Walmart has returned to keeping track of how many people enter its stores as the U.S. faces a surging coronavirus caseload, the company confirmed to FOX Business.

"Walmart began limiting capacity in our stores to 20% in early April, or lower if mandated by a local government, and that limit has remained in place since then," Walmart said in a statement. "We know from months of metering data in our stores that the vast majority of the time our stores didn’t reach our self-imposed 20% metering capacity. Out of an abundance of caution, we have resumed counting the number of people entering and leaving our stores."

WALMART ADDING 'POP-UP' CENTERS FOR ONLINE HOLIDAY SALES

Coronavirus hospitalizations have been trending upward over the past few weeks, with medical professionals treating COVID patients feeling the effects firsthand.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in the U.S. reached 61,964, a record high, on Tuesday according to data from the COVID Tracking Project. The Midwest and Texas, in particular, are driving the hospitalization surge.

Walmart and its sister store Sam's Club operate more than 5,000 retail locations nationwide.

The pandemic has forced the retailer to rethink how it serves its customers. For example, Walmart launched its first online-only Black Friday sales event in early November.

The holiday sales, announced earlier this year, are part of the company's effort to spread out the traditional one-day event to deter large crowds from gathering amid the coronavirus pandemic. This year, heading into the holiday season, the company is offering three events both online and in-store that will be spread out through the month of November.

We have a couple of smaller locally owned places and they are not going to be locked down.
They don't have the selection that Walmart does, but they do ok.

I stopped shopping at China Mart when they got in bed with Bloomberg and became anti gun so I don't care what they do.

They sell guns at the Walmart we shop at. They've never sold pistols however.

They did bail on pistol ammo, and 223/556 after the El Paso shootings.

They did bail on pistol ammo, and 223/556 after the El Paso shootings.

They still sell guns at a lot of locations including the one near me but as soon as they formed a "partnership" with Michael Bloomberg and Everytown for Gun Safety I decided my days of being a Walmart customer were over.

https://corporate.walmart.com/policies

Walmart is a charter member of the Responsible Firearms Retailer Partnership, organized by Walmart and Everytown for Gun Safety.

Here's a letter from the CEO of Walmart to Congress calling on them to enact more gun control, specifically red flag laws, Universal background checks and a ban on semiautos:
https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/6379982-Walmart-Responsible-Firearms-Policies.html

We believe we have been doing our part to make the country safer. But Congress and the
Administration need to do their part as well. There are multiple bills before the House and Senate that
address the issue of gun safety and are worth examining. Specifically, we are encouraged by bipartisan
calls by our nation’s leaders to strengthen background checks and to remove weapons from those who
have been determined to pose an imminent danger. We believe it is time for action on these common
sense measures.

Additionally, we do not sell military-style rifles and will no longer sell ammunition that can be
used in them, and we believe the reauthorization of the Assault Weapons ban should be debated to
determine its effectiveness.

With friends like Walmart who needs enemies?

So whom did you replace Walmart with?

A little bit of everyone. I lost the convenience of one stop shopping but I'd rather support local small businesses or pro 2A online businesses. I buy ammo online from Brownell's or Basspro. I have better and cheaper options for groceries locally as well. Tools, automotive or lawn and garden I go to either local mom and pop, Lowe's, Home Depot, or Tractor Supply. I also buy clothes from Tractor Supply or other online sources.

It's been over a year since I stopped going to Walmart and I can't say I miss them.

Tractor Supply is pretty good place for a lot of stuff,  then La Tienda Thriftway or Albertsons for groceries.
The Dollar stores, Home Depot, Walgreens, haven't been in Walmart for several months now. Don't miss it
a bit.

Dollar General is another one I go to that replaced Walmart. Walmart is an hour round trip for me, Dollar General is only 20 minutes round trip.

I like DG, they have the simple things we need. And at good prices.

We've got a Dollar General about 3 blocks away, and buy a few things there occasionally.

My shift from Walmart, went mostly to DG.  Has anyone noticed..DG is stocking more grocery items now?
For groceries, we have Save a Lot not too far away, but I like Aldis better, even though it is a longer drive for me.
I sometimes use chain grocery stores, but not if I can avoid them.

Yes DG has quite a few grocery items now which definitely helps in avoiding Walmart. DG has a smart business model, they locate stores in small towns away from Walmarts. Towns that are too small for a Walmart but easily support a DG.

That was the intent of its founder in TN. Better than conveniece stores.

DG built a new store just up the state highway from me..handy.  ..And they have broadened their list of groceries, although I don't expect they will get into fresh meats and vegetables.
Now that I am alone. my needs are much smaller, so DG helps a lot.

Some DG stores have meats and produce. One of them in Lubbock TX. does, and they are thinking about expanding the one here to do the same. That would be nice if they do, it's lot closer than the other stores.
