House Votes to Decriminalize Marijuana at Federal Level

The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Friday to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level, but the legislation is not expected to advance further as long as the Senate remains in Republican hands.

It was the first time either chamber of Congress has voted to end the federal ban on marijuana since the drug was listed as a "controlled substance" in 1970.

Fifteen U.S. states and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational use of marijuana, and over 30 states allow some form of the drug for medicinal purposes. U.S. cannabis sales hit record levels over the Thanksgiving weekend.

But the federal ban on the drug persists, which creates conflicts with state laws and limits cannabis companies' access to banking services and funding.

The Democrat-majority House voted 228-164, largely along party lines, to lift the federal prohibition. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, is an opponent of the change, meaning a decriminalization proposal is unlikely to see Senate action unless Democrats manage to win both Georgia Senate seats, and with them Senate control, in a Jan. 5 runoff election.

The bill the House passed would allow states to regulate marijuana, Rep. Earl Blumenauer, a Democrat and co-chairman of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, said in debate.

“This legislation does not legalize cannabis across the country. It stops the federal government from interfering with what states have decided to do," he said.

Republican Rep. Debbie Lesko said she found it incredible that Democrats were talking about "legalizing marijuana" instead of focusing on passing more relief from the coronavirus pandemic. "Sometimes I think that the world is turned upside down," she said.

In fact, the House in May passed a mammoth coronavirus aid bill, but it did not advance in the Republican-run Senate. Negotiations are underway on a smaller compromise bill.

The cannabis bill would expunge federal marijuana convictions and impose a 5% tax on cannabis products. The revenue raised would help reinvest in communities most adversely impacted by enforcement of the law, Blumenauer said.

I spent 21 years of my life arresting pot growers, and peddlers. What I came away with was, that the only reason it was illegal was the government could not figure out how to effectively tax it.
Is it worse than Jack Daniels?

I sincerely doubt it.

Exactly. If you look at the states who have legalized it the only reason it was legalized was the government essentially became the dealer. Now that the governments have figured out how to become the dealers and tax it suddenly pot is no longer a crime.

You could probably substitute; prescription drugs, farm subsidies, oil depletion allowances, tax "incentives", welfare, social security, medicare, medicaid, HUGE defense spending, and any number of things for "pot" and still not have a false statement.

Since several states have legalized it, many legitimate medical derivatives have come to light.  Previously it was said to have no medial uses but that's clearly BS...

I don't think there will be any more pot smokers if it's legalized nationally than there are now.

A lot of what they put in different dope

would poison you if you were to just sit
down and ingest them straight out of the
containers. Of course they get you dizzy
and high. That's your brain and body trying
to shake off the effects the chemicals are
having. Compare that to painting in an
enclosed space, or using carburetor or
brake cleaner in your garage. Used to be
a lot of the young mex kids in this area were
shoplifting spray paint and huffing it to get
high and more than a few died from it.
It was so bad that for about a year all the
local stores had spray paint under lock and
key.
I don't give two s**** if someone wants to
sit at home and get high and cook their own
brain as long as they do it in their own private
residence. I do object when they get out in
public where they might endanger me and
mine or my or someone else's property
because of their impaired judgment and
reaction time. I'm sure there are still a
few potheads here. I know there were a
bunch on the old site.
Just keep your altered judgment to yourself
at your own residence and don't come
around me when you're not able to think
straight and we'll be good

So the "house" votes to legalize it!  ....Likely for 2 reasons... 1) them and their kids are users!  and... 2) They can collect taxes..

If they are users, we must understand that addictions can bring on all kinds of ills.

For tax purposes?  Well, in that case since it is a money making scheme, and the house approves of it..let's just call them the "Wh__ehouse" !

Agreed though it stays in and affects the body far, far, far longer.

Anti-drug/booze laws are the result of god wannabes trying to show how much better they are than others, or my way or the  highway/jail.

They are the same dark alley way as racial discrimination.

Laws that put controls slow the unscrupulous  and  are therfore necessary .
There is a world of difference between that and banning.
At that I still like the 3.2 beer law of which Minn. is now the last, and I loathe that they now allow liquor sales, off sale on Sunday.
If you cannot get enough booze for the weekend during the week , you are a moron who does not deserve to have any.

Almost to the man, nearly everyone I ever knew who used pot, either got fired from their good paying jobs; some lost their families and some disappeared.  Where I worked I sure didn't want anyone around who was impaired in any way.  The work was dangerous enough without any of that.  It was not tolerated at all.  It is a gateway drug and I think the argument that it is no worse than alcohol is dumb.

When and where I grew up as a youngster, there was no such thing as marijuana, nor any other drugs.  There was beer and that got enough dumb heads in trouble.  We sure didn't need anything else to screw peoples lives up.  Some try to justify legalizing drugs with the freedom banner.  In a very primitive society, absolute freedom might work, but our society is too interactive for absolutes.  Mind altering drugs for non-medical application is not something that any sensible society should endorse.

Exactly the way I see it Dee. I live in a Democrat controlled state, and the only thing they have ever passed I agree with was making it legal.I know a lot of my conservative friends disagree with me on this one,but the facts are, Law enforcement cannot control it .Decriminalize it, and If a person commits a crime while using it, then charge them with that crime. My family has many in it working in law enforcement, and they all tell me, they would much rather deal with a pot smoker, than a Drunk. But Alcohol is legal. When they legalized MJ here in Oregon, the  only difference I saw , was less people being arrested for using it. In my extended family, we have one daily user of the stuff, and after the law changed, it's still only one. And that person isn't a threat to anyone. The times we live in now, is making life miserable for our defenders in blue. We need them protecting us from serious crime. not some kid smoking a joint. If I was a Republican US Sen., I would vote to decriminalize it in a hear beat.

If you suddenly remove the alcohol from a long time drunk, and the drugs/narcotics from an addict. Two separate things will happen.

The drunk will go into detoxification and MAY DIE, while the drug addict will go into withdrawal and THINK he's going to die, but he will not. He will become sober.

Jack Daniels can cause addiction, while pot, especially today's powerful pot also causes addiction.
So, we have one addictive substance legalized now...  I am trying to figure out the benefit of legalizing more..

For the same reason Prohibition was eliminated.
There is still a very small amount of illegal liquor, it is not a national plague like illegal drugs.
The  users will keep using, ---- numbers will not go up, ----  always has been and always will but the criminal society will not profit off of it while businesses who WILL, do not doubt that, make a profit will put a LOT of money  into stopping those still outside the law.

In Minn. back thirty years ago when the drinking age was raised to 21, arrests for drinking went down, local law enforcement, the newspaper said, LEO and law makers changed the law were surprised drug arrests went up, considerably.
That worked real well -- probably only happen stance but in the ten years that followed gun related offences dramatically went up, including murders in a town of only 50,000 some people but then most of the perps. last known address was Chicago.
Now the white trash up here, and there are some real scum bags, male and female, are competing with the Somali punks for gutter scum crown.

Which drug is worse? To non-users?

I'd say the one that has no side of the road test for impairment or intoxication.

And the one that users commonly mix with 2, 3 or more drugs.

Well, you're moved the question into an entirely different issue.

The issue is legalized marijuana. I compared it to alcohol.

Your enjecting a separate issue. Driving under the influence of either.

I say minimum of 2 years county jail, or prison for 1st offenders on either.

If humans had zero vices, the world would be a perfect place to live. Unfortunately it ain't so! Some of the most impaired drivers I have daily contact with, are old coots my age. I know I have to be more conscious of my driving than I use to. My night time driving is over period. My reaction time is slower, as well as other functions that are increasing with time.I see others driving that are way more impaired. Impaired drivers should be removed from our roadways, regardless of the impairment. I don't think someone who has had (say) one drink over the limit, or one pain killer too many, should be penalized the same as someone bouncing off telephone polls, and unable to answer coherently. let the punishment fit the actions. BTW, I've never had a DUI, but years ago I could have.I believe a majority on here could say as much.

As I am older, I drive the speed limits and watch much closer. Any event I've had was not my fault.
It was from young oil field kids driving company vehicles. Rear ended at a yeild sign. Driving fast changeing lanes and not paying attention. Water haulers are the most dangerous out there.  Oil field, hurry hurry all the time. 80mph in a 30 zone, and passing school buses with signs out who are unloading kids.

Stupidity is just as bad as impaired.

Another thing about legalizing Pot. When Oregon did it, they allowed for every house hold to grow up to three plants for recreational use. That is not taxed. They do tax medical and retail pot,but why would a pot smoker buy it, when they can grow it.I have yet to see, after several years a pot plant growing. And I have looked. I'm sure they are out there, but not flooding the streets like some said would happen. Since it does stay in the system (not the high) longer than Alcohol, many young workers don't smoke or use it, because some companies test for it. The worst drug commonly found (Booze) does not, so they just come to work on Mondays with a hangover! I'm sure some hard alcoholics come to work even a little drunk. There are functional drunks. I have known a few. I don't do either now, but if I did, it would not be Booze.

Since Oregon has taken away the meds I used for chronic pain, I tryed micro dosing with THC oil.  It helped a little but if I took enough to get very much relief, then I'd start to feel high.  I never really liked that feeling.  It did help me sleep but for what it costs, I can live without it.

I did find that CBD micro-dosed with THC allowed me to go longer between having to take a leak.  I think there's a potential prostate med in the mix and I hope someday some medical researcher looks into it...

I used to get a lot more pain relief from opiates with far less high.  When I could still ride my bikes I was very conscious about being impaired.  Around 26 years old, I had a major lifestyle change and I quite alcohol completely for myself anyway.  I like what it does for my engines but that's another story.

OK..but as I see it, we already have a problem with booze..I see no way approving of other intoxicants helps the problem.
Perhaps I am too ingrained with Christian principles, in that I fully understand that there are many things a man can do, but that doesn't mean he should do them.
A man can often do, if he is willing..steal, lie, cheat on his wife, and many other things, but still the thought remains...should he do those things?
Don't get me wrong, I am not accusing anyone of these things and certainly not trying to pretend that I am sinless, but only bringing up the thought of trying to maintain upright character.
Perhaps I am out of line..barking up the wrong tree, since so many on the radleft do not endorse the Christian moral code.

CBD and low doses of THC have proven effective for treating epileptic seizures.  I think there could be many other compounds in the plant that will have legitimate medical uses.

While I voted against legalizing weed, in retrospect, it's turned out to have positives that I didn't see coming...

If we're gonna get Biblical on the issue, no where in the Bible does it say to abstain from alcohol. In fact it says a little wine is good for the stomach.

What the Bible DOES SAY, is to abstain from strong drink, and to not be a wine bibber. aka, a drunk.

These scriptures tell you that there have
always been, since the beginning, those that abuse EVERYTHING!..

Do we ban food, to prevent "gluttony"?

Theres a line between use, and abuse, and Christianity and fanaticism.
