cool story
« on: December 05, 2020, 02:09:38 AM »
never heard this story before. I was at the va hospital yesterday and they had a 50s news clipping about it. I thought it was kind of cool. I looked it up on line rather then try to remember the whole story How Tootsie Rolls Accidentally Saved Marines During War - Marine Corps Community (usmc-mccs.org)   https://www.usmc-mccs.org/articles/how-tootsie-rolls-accidentally-saved-marines-during-war/

Very interesting, but I had not heard that story before, although I had often heard personal stories, first hand from participants..members of the "Frozen Chosin", men I served with in the Army.

Curiously, my daughter-in-law's father and later he mother's second husband both served
as those among the Frozen Chosin.  After that, both swore they never wanted to be that cold again.
Her bio Dad lived out his days near the Salton Sea, nearly on the Mexican border, while her step Dad & Mom have long lived around Phoenix !

I worked with a man " John Holly" who fought in that battle. He was wounded in the chest by some grenade shrapnel. He said the intense cold may have saved his life. It froze the blood that was on his clothing and reduced the bleeding.
