Christmas star is coming: Jupiter and Saturn are about to do something not seen for nearly 800 years
Jupiter and Saturn will look like a double planet, an event not seen since 1226
By Chris Ciaccia | Fox News

Fox News Flash top headlines for December 6
This year has been a year unlike any other in recent memory and it will conclude with the return of a celestial event not seen for almost 800 years.

The two largest planets in the solar system, Jupiter and Saturn, will do something later this month not seen since the Middle Ages: forming what looks like a double planet. This celestial event has been dubbed the "Christmas star."

The rare occurrence will happen after sunset on Dec. 21, 2020, the start of the winter solstice.

“Alignments between these two planets are rather rare, occurring once every 20 years or so, but this conjunction is exceptionally rare because of how close the planets will appear to one another,” said Rice University astronomer Patrick Hartigan in a statement. “You’d have to go all the way back to just before dawn on March 4, 1226, to see a closer alignment between these objects visible in the night sky.”

A view showing how the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction will appear in a telescope pointed toward the western horizon at 6 p.m. CST, Dec. 21, 2020. Between Dec. 16 and Dec. 25, the two planets will be separated by less than a full moon, Hartigan added.

“On the evening of closest approach, on Dec. 21, they will look like a double planet, separated by only fifth the diameter of the full moon,” Hartigan explained. “For most telescope viewers, each planet and several of their largest moons will be visible in the same field of view that evening.”

The celestial event that has been dubbed the Christmas Star, or Star of Bethlehem, can be observed anywhere on Earth, but Hartigan noted the farther north someone is, "the less time they have to catch a glimpse."

The nativity star may also have been a rare celestial alignment, with Jupiter, Venus and a star known as Regulus all aligning around 2 B.C., Justin Mason, a director of Old Dominion University's Pretlow Planetarium, told The Virginian-Pilot.

Stargazers should try to see the event this month or risk waiting a long time for the next occurrence. The two planets won't be this close to each other again until March 15, 2080, and sometime after the year 2400, Hartigan said.

One problem; most scholars doubt the popular December date for our Lord's birth.  Most estimate the birth as some time in October...or thereabouts !

The Romans would have known when it was. Just about the time the first born of Israel were ordered to be put to death. Not by the Romans. And Mary and Joseph had to flee into Egypt. If you look, some of the months of our year were named after Roman Emperors. Or their gods.
Julius, July.
August, Augustus , which would have been in power at the time of Jesus
June, Juno
December, Domitian
October, Octavian
March, Marcus
September, Septivus

I recall reading somewhere that Christ was born in springtime and that early catholic leaders put in on December 25th to take over the pagan celebration on that day.

Regardless of when we calibrate it, we need to keep Christ in Christmas.

Or even September. December 21 through 25 a pagan holiday drafted into Christianity by Constantine to get all the little heathens in line.

I suspect you are right on the adoption of Dec 25th...that was about the time of the winter solstice celebrations, and the RC Church at that time, was inclined to 'compromise', to get new converts.
So far as a springtime birth date, could be..I won't debate the point.  The primary reason the Dec 25 date is unwieldy, is because when the angels announced the event to the shepherds, they were tending their flocks in the field.  That would not be likely in late December.  If they were tending their sheep closely, that would indicate spring, and the lambing season.

Falls right in line with "Christmas trees". Paganism worshipers brought cedar boughs into the house as vegetation began dying off in the fall.

In 43 BC his great-uncle, Julius Caesar, was assassinated and in his will, Octavius, known as Octavian, was named as his heir. ... His powers were hidden behind constitutional forms, and he took the name Augustus meaning 'lofty' or 'serene'.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_calendar

This article is about a calendar used for civil and liturgical purposes. For the day-number calendar used for astronomical and historical calculations, see Julian day. For day of year, see Ordinal date. For the terms 'Julian date' and 'Julian Period', see Julian day.
Calendar   Today
Gregorian   8 December 2020
Julian   25 November 2020
The Julian calendar, proposed by Julius Caesar in AUC 708 (46 BC), was a reform of the Roman calendar.[1] It took effect on 1 January AUC 709 (45 BC), by edict. It was designed with the aid of Greek mathematicians and Greek astronomers such as Sosigenes of Alexandria.

The calendar was the predominant calendar in the Roman world and most of Europe for more than 1,600 years. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII in his papal bull Inter gravissimas promulgated a minor modification, reducing the length of the average year from 365.25 days to 365.2425 days, thus correcting the drift against the solar year that the inaccuracy had caused during the intervening centuries. Worldwide adoption of this revised calendar, which became known as the Gregorian calendar, took place over the subsequent centuries.

The Julian calendar is still used in parts of the Eastern Orthodox Church and in parts of Oriental Orthodoxy as well as by the Berbers.[2]

The Julian calendar has two types of years: a normal year of 365 days and a leap year of 366 days. They follow a simple cycle of three normal years and one leap year, giving an average year that is 365.25 days long. That is more than the actual solar year value of 365.24219 days, which means the Julian calendar gains a day every 128 years. For any given event during the years from 1901 to 2099 inclusive, its date according to the Julian calendar is 13 days behind its corresponding Gregorian date.

The Christmas tree is more a Martin Luther thing , rather than an RC thing.   I don't attach much to the Christmas tree motivation, since when I lived in Germany I found that when a new house was under construction, as soon as some rafters were erected, the builder would mount a small evergreen tree upon that highest point!
Why would they do that? I really don't know, but it probably is simply "custom", perhaps even coming down from the druids.  Europe has many customs which are centuries old, but so far as I could ascertain, the builders themselves likely couldn't explain any esoteric reason for their mounting of the evergreen.
Certainly the mistletoe custom came down from antiquity, and it is still green at that time.
