Charlie Pride was one of the best country singers ever. The first Pride song I ever heard was in I believe 1965, as a DJ in Arkansas My station manager and program director dropped off a 45 rpm on my console and said play this next. I asked him who this guy was and he said, just play it, I'll tell you later. The A side was "The Snakes Crawl At Night" It was the kind of song you knew would be a hit.The singer knocked it out of the park. When he showed me a picture of the man singing it, I couldn't believe my eyes. I had heard several Black singers do a country song,( Ray Charles is one that comes to mind), but the first Black singer that didn't sound Black. The Snakes Crawl At Night has always been a favorite of mine. Written by another great writer, singer. Mel Tellis. "RIP" Charlie Pride.
