Lost another great yesterday
« on: December 13, 2020, 06:34:57 AM »
Charlie Pride died yesterday from complications from Covid-19. Always enjoyed his music always remember some saying he looks like us (blacks) but sings like them ( whites) He has a son in the music industry he put on a good show but not as good as his dad, saw him on the Penny Gilley show some time back.

Pride had 2 or 3 songs I liked, but after that not so much. Im the same way with Willie Nelson.

Haggard, I liked most of what he put out.  Waylon, about 60%, an Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys I liked almost everything they did AFTER Bob died and they played on their own. They slowed it down, and played it for listening, instead of just dancing.

Dee I am with you on this he had only about 3 songs I really liked. The Hag almost all his stuff. Willie about half. Never cared a lot for Bob wills. But I am the same way with most all performers, they all have several songs I like. John Prine about four or five, Guy Clark about half of his stuff John Denver around three fourths. Most all the really greats even Waylon maybe three fourths even old Billy Joe Shaver Had one I really liked, Old five and dimers like me. In the music business it is really hard to stay on top as you need to come up with songs that are really great and that people really enjoy listening too. Lot of the times it is the music and the beat that makes a great song.

Agreed, John Denver never sang anything I liked,  but I grew up on Bob Wills, so what could I do.
About everybody else you named had something I liked. Billy Joe wrote better than he sang, but he wrote some good songs.

Billy Joe wrote and sold his music just like Jackson Browne did.

Billy Joe was not a good singer agreed and the only song he sings that I like is the old five and dimers which he does a fair job on, not as good as Waylon but still ok.

I never was a dancer, but played for many dances.Mostly belly rubbers, and Southern Rock. Never could get into western swing. I liked the Nashville sound. Back when Lefty, George, and the Hank's were at their best.Later I liked the outlaw boys like Waylon & Willie. Never cared for Willie when he was trying straight country.

I grew up on Bob Wills too and what I did was change stations when anything by him was played. That skreechy fiddle was more than I could take. Earnest Tubb was another that I tuned out. It was kind of tough growing up in an area where every station you could get was CW. To this day none of the push buttons on an any of my radios are tuned to CW stations.
