A gun owner with a concealed-carry permit shot and killed an armed robbery suspect at a Chicago cell phone store on Saturday night, according to police.

It was not immediately clear whether the 29-year-old gun owner was the business owner, an employee or a customer, FOX 32 of Chicago reported.

The gun owner shot the armed suspect at least two times in the 7 p.m. incident, police told the station. The suspect was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead, FOX 32 reported.

Police confiscated weapons from both the suspect and the gun owner as part of their investigation, the news outlet reported.

The incident happened in the city’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, the report said. It was unclear how many people were inside the store at the time.

Of course they took both guns. They're both evidence concerning the event. When a police officer is involved in a shooting, they take his gun.
If cleared, the defender of the store gets his gun back.

Never carry a keepsake gun for self defense. If you get the gun back at all, it will be a long time.

In Chicago, I'd not bet on the guy ever seeing his gun again and I highly doubt he'll keep his CCW permit. That's a very gun unfriendly town.

Bill may be much closer to the truth than many think. It seems that everything in Chicago these days, revolves around "race".
I hope the CCW holder was a store employee. Otherwise, who knows? The DA could charge him/her, by claiming they could have walked off, rather than shoot the perp!
One sticky part seems to be the term "self defense", and I have heard of CCW holder being charged, because they shot in defense of a stranger.
If that seems outrageous, consider the couple from the St Louis area, who were defending themselves and their property from a rampaging mob! They have been dragged through misery, and no shots were even fired !
So often, "justice" embodies feelings which run far beyond common sense.

Well, everything other than the two guns being taken as evidence so far is speculation, as the "final results" of the investigation, isn't "final".

Exactly, my carry guns are always ugly but functional weapons that I won't cry over if I lose them.

I gave ALL of my "keepsake guns" to my sons. Two were "business guns" from my law enforcement days.
My self protection guns are all quality guns that I'll bet my life on. Im not concerned about losing a gun to the police over a justified shooting. I'm concerned about losing the fight.

I've had MY GUN taken twice pending shooting investigations. Both were returned.
I have seized SEVERAL guns involved in shootings by folks defending themselves, AND accidental shootings.
ALL GUNS were returned to the owners after the investigation was completed.

Oh sure they should. But in the end it isn't really their decision in Chicago. He was in violation of city ordinances just bringing it in. That in the end will likely decide his fate as well as that of his gun.

Permits are state not city permits. IL has something called a FOID you must get to own any gun or to buy ammo. It is state issued. They don't have preemption so cities can make laws much different than state law, Chicago has.

There are no gun shops and no gun sales there. Handguns are pretty much banned in city limits.

I've never lived there so maybe someone at least from the state can expand on this or correct any errors I've made.

Lotsa folks not from up there don't. I've read extensively of their problems, someone from IL would likely be able to better explain all the details.

I tend to think of Chicago as more like a foreign country than America.

Yes! Those big cities can be nutsy.. I have a NY State CCW permit, but I cannot carry in NY City.. I really don't care about that though, because I don't plan on vacationing in Mogadishu west, anytime soon!
In fact, as I understand it, some are really off the wall. I am told that people who get a permit in Buffalo, cannot regularly carry, since restrictions are placed upon them, to confine their carry to shooting ranges, and possibly hunting only. However, we who live in another county..can legally carry in Buffalo.

If I am wrong in any way, perhaps some CCW holder from Buffalo will correct, or at least explain their situation.
