A dana 44 is near as tough but back in the day before overdrives i knew guys that raced there cars that took advantage of the ability of a 9 inch to swap gears so easily. In less then a 1/2 hour you can go from a 343 to a 488. Now with ODs you can run steeper gears all the time and with todays cars your computer is calibrated to the gear ratio so if you swap them you also have to reprogram. So it just isnt done much anymore. I remember guys back in the day that carried a third member in there trunk with there slicks. Ive seen them swapped out right on the side of the road. Stock car guys loved them too. They could easily in the pit change ratios to fit the track conditions.
