Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed a bill Wednesday requiring women to either cremate or bury fetal remains from surgical abortions.

The bill signed into law states the "pregnant woman is responsible for the costs related to the final disposition of the fetal remains at the chosen location."

If cremation is chosen, the fetus must also be placed in a "grave, crypt, or niche," the measure states.

Whoever fails to follow the bill’s requirements will face "a misdemeanor of the first degree."
Planned Parenthood has slammed the bill as unnecessary and described it as another attack against women.

"This is honestly just a familiar ploy by these lawmakers who use the chaos of the end of year session to try and pass these unpopular bills," Lauren Powell, a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio, told WEWS-TV.
"Studies have repeatedly shown that the majority of Ohioans support access to safe and legal abortion care. This is not something that is intended to promote patient safety or access to care. Really, it’s just another attack."

Meanwhile, DeWine, a Republican, has another abortion bill on his desk that would ban the use of telemedicine during abortions. Doctors who fail to comply with the law would face criminal charges.
