Capitol protests: Woman shot, killed ID'd as Ashli Babbitt, Air Force veteran
She was a strong supporter of President Trump, her husband said
Danielle WallaceBy Danielle Wallace, Louis Casiano | Fox News

Fox News Flash top headlines for January 6
The woman fatally shot inside the U.S. Capitol Wednesday has been identified as Ashli Babbitt, a friend confirms to Fox News. Babbitt was a 14-year veteran who served four tours with the Air Force and resided in San Diego, according to media reports.

Babbitt was a strong supporter of President Trump, her husband told WTTG-TV. Messages to him from Fox News were not returned.

"I really don’t know why she decided to do this," Babbitt's mother-in-law told the local Fox affiliate in D.C.

Babbitt's husband was not in D.C with her. The couple owned a business together, according to reports.

Authorities were in riot gear protecting the Capitol as the media and lawmakers returned to resume a joint session of Congress halted hours earlier when a mob breached security and stormed the building, resulting in the fatal shooting.

Early reports said a woman was shot in the chest and transported from the building just before 3 p.m., the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department told Fox News. It was not clear who fired the shot or what led to the shooting.

A police spokeswoman did not disclose the woman's identity.

Agents with the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, the Secret Service and the Capitol Police were stationed throughout the Capitol to prevent any more disruptions that marred Wednesday's planned review of electoral votes.

Vice President Mike Pence returned to the Senate and to oversee the session. A spokesman said he never left the Capitol and was in regular contact with authorities amid efforts to secure the building.

The violence erupted as lawmakers were in the process of certifying the Electoral College votes won by President-elect Joe Biden. They were told to put on gas masks and barricade inside as law enforcement officers tried to restore order amid the chaos.

Protesters reportedly smashed glass doors and authorities drew their weapons to protect the building. The certification was stopped after Congress recessed as the chaos escalated outside and inside the Capitol building.

Pence, who broke with Trump and refused to reject the electoral votes and send them back to the states, was ushered out of the chamber.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., told Fox News that he heard from police that shots were fired in the building.

"This is not the direction we should go," McCarthy said, while urging Trump to make a statement.

Around the Capitol, three suspicious devices with pipe components and wires were found, Fox News learned. It was unclear if the items were explosives.

GOP lawmaker describes 'despicable' scene at US Capitol buildingVideo
In a tweet, Trump urged his supporters to "remain peaceful!" as they stormed the Capitol and attacked police officers.

"I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful," he wrote. "No violence! Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order – respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!"

In a subsequent video, he told them to go home while still pushing debunked claims of widespread election fraud. Twitter later removed three of his tweets, including the video, and locked his account for 12 hours.

In a separate address, Biden called Wednesday's unrest "an assault on our Republic, an assault on the rule of the law...of the most sacred of American undertakings -- the doing of the people's business,"

"This is not dissent, it's disorder, it's chaos, it borders on sedition and it must end now," he added.

In response to the violence, the Pentagon said the National Guard was mobilized to assist federal law enforcement officers.

"The D.C. Guard has been mobilized to provide support to federal law enforcement in the District," said Jonathan Hoffman, chief Pentagon spokesman. "The law enforcement response will be led by the Department of Justice."

The Virginia National Guard and FBI also will deploy to Washington. Details on the number of personnel and operations were unavailable. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told Fox News that agents also went to the Capitol to secure the building.

The Cannon House Office Building and Madison Library of Congress Building were briefly evacuated after several suspicious packages were reportedly found in the area, a congressional source told Fox News.

U.S. Capitol Police were asking personnel to relocate from Cannon and to "shelter in place" at the Rayburn and Longworth House Office Buildings.

A police memo sent to lawmakers read: "Due to police activity, all personnel are advised to relocate from the Cannon House Office Building to the Rayburn and Longworth House Office Buildings through the underground tunnels. Do not evacuate outside the buildings. All personnel should shelter in place in the Rayburn and Longworth House Office buildings."

A journalist with Fox 5 DC who was inside the Cannon office building at the time said an officer stood in the center of the rotunda and shouted for people to "clear the building."

The U.S. Capitol complex was locked down. An announcement played that said anyone there should "move away from windows and doors" and that "no one can leave or enter." People were still permitted to move inside the building.

Another announcement inside the Senate press room said: "Lock all doors if able. If unable, seek shelter or concealment. Remain calm and await further directions. I repeat... security threats, security threats, security threats inside the U.S. Capitol."

An explosive device also was found at the Republican National Committee in Washington, which was destroyed by the FBI, the New York Times reported. The nearby Democratic National Committee headquarters was evacuated after a suspicious package was found, according to the newspaper.

WARNING: PROFANITY

During the chaos, fencing set up to hold crowds back was breached by protesters. U.S. Capitol Police tried to push people back. The Capitol plaza closed, even to members attempting to go into the chamber for the joint session of Congress.

Videos shared online showed a crowd, some of whom carried pro-Trump, Confederate and American flags, clash with federal law enforcement officers wearing helmets and shields. Other images showed a mob engaging in violent behavior in the Capitol where lawmakers, aides and journalists ran for cover.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a citywide curfew amid the continuing violence that will run from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. Thursday.

Former White House Communications Director Alyssa Farrah, who resigned in December, urged Trump to condemn the violence from his supporters.

"Condemn this now, @realDonaldTrump - you are the only one they will listen to. For our country!" she tweeted.

The backlash from lawmakers was immediate. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., tweeted she was drawing up articles of impeachment while Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., urged Pence to use the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, called for the protesters engaged in violence to be prosecuted.

"This is a sad day for America. As a nation, we must be better than this."

Ashley Babbitt was part of a crowd that forced their way into a secured area of the Capital building.
Being a 14 year veteran of the United States Air Force, she had to have known this.
So "murdered" while breaking into a government facility containing such individuals as "The Vice President of the United States " would hardly be considered "murder " regardless of how unfortunate.

Using the left's standards for police it would be considered murder yet not one leftist is calling for defunding the Capitol police.

While it's a tragedy that she was shot and killed, she should have stayed outside the gates and just made noise like they were supposed to do.  President Trump never asked for them to storm the gates, that would be just asking for trouble.

The truth is that the left doesn't give a crap about how much we protest and complain so long as they're in power.  Perhaps the day will come when civil war breaks out but it's going to get ugly fast and every one needs to understand that before the first shot is fired.

A far and honest government would take a rally of that size into consideration.  In business school they told us that for ever customer that complains there are at least 10 more that feel the same but didn't take action.  I'd bet for every person that made the trip to Washington to complain, there are at least 100 more that would have liked to have gone but didn't have the means to do so...  Best guess is that at least half the nation feels screwed out of our choice for president and it's going to be interesting to see how that plays out.

Half to agree with you. Maybe she shouldnt have been shot. But she was assaulting a the capital and was right along side of people assaulting police officers. She knew what she signed up for. At least she did if she had an iq of over 60. What did she think? that she would be handed candy when she broke into the capital. I feel more for that police officer that will get dragged across the coals and will have his life ruined then i do for her.

But back to the thread topic. Ashli Babbit.

Ashli Babbit was shot while crawling through a window on a door. The officer who shot her was screaming repeatedly for her to stop.
Had she been allowed to enter, she could have unlocked the door allowing the mob to proceed, or if she was concealing a bomb, could have detonated a bomb in our countrys' Capital building.
No one knew who she was, or what her intentions were.
She was the aggressor here.

Would any reasonable person allow an unknown as Babbitt indeed was, to proceed not knowing their intentions. If I myself were cornered in such a manner, and in that same position. Im not gonna wait to see what the criminal is gonna  do. I'm am gonna defend myself. Vigorously!

I don't disagree with you that Antifa was there too, I've seen it with my own eyes on video. Look up Millenial Millie on youtube, she has a great video showing all of the fishy stuff that happened that day like buses of antifa showing up with a police escort, etc. They definitely made the situation worse and acted like idiots. That said I can't criticize the patriots who were there for at least trying to do something when our backs are against the wall even if it was poorly executed. I think you and I both agree that we'll never have a fair election in this country ever again. That in itself is cause to take the gloves off and stop playing nice.

TM says it was ANTIFA doin the burglary. I doubted it, but on the News today, a known ANTIFA operative was one of the arrested,  and the dumbass wearing the buffalo head is associated with ANTIFA riots according to the news.

Had I known that they were going to take it to the level they took it to, I wouldn't have made the remarks you cited, and like I said, I later learned more and backed away. Maybe you should to. They made a bad situation much worse.

Here, I looked it up for  ya.
Post# 20 Thread title: Biden calls riot insurrection, Trump tells them go home

I don't disagree with you that Antifa was there too, I've seen it with my own eyes on video. Look up Millenial Millie on youtube, she has a great video showing all of the fishy stuff that happened that day like buses of antifa showing up with a police escort, etc. They definitely made the situation worse and acted like idiots. That said I can't criticize the patriots who were there for at least trying to do something when our backs are against the wall even if it was poorly executed. I think you and I both agree that we'll never have a fair election in this country ever again. That in itself is cause to take the gloves off and stop playing nice.

I at first didn't believe ANTIFA was there. Arrests have proved me mistaken. But many as they are being arrested are proving to be over zealous Trump supporters.
They by going too far, derailed any hope of fairness in settling this electoral theft.
I'm am not in a hurry for a civil war, because it will with the military technology of today, and shear numbers in population, make the last one look like a school yard shoving match.

As you said, we agree on probably everything but the immediate solution. I don't think we're at the trigger pulling stage just yet.

In an ideal world we would squash things immediately but I have to reluctantly agree with you. I think there's so much apathy in America that people are going to have to be pushed way further to get to the trigger pulling stage.

Well, its like the air force veteran in this thread. I saw the video before it hit the TV.  Did the air force not teach her to avoid gunshot wounds.

She's crawling through a broken window in a barricaded doorway, into a secured area, with Congress and the vice president of the United States on the other side, with a Glock in her face.

He didn't have to point the gun at me to convince me she wasn't coming through that door.
She wasn't being patriotic, she was being an idiot. The whole fiasco didn't help the cause, it hurt the cause. My opinion.

Have a plan. Have organization. Have goals.

They had no goals other than to take pictures of themselves. They blew a golden opportunity.
