On a lighter note
« on: January 10, 2021, 04:42:14 AM »
We have snow this morning. Plus ice on everything from freezing fog Friday night and most of yesterday. Weatherguessers predicted 4 to 8 inches. It appears to be about 2 inches looking out my north door where it hasn't drifted any. This winter was predicted to be warmer than usual around here too and so far they have missed on that guess also.

Envious I am. I did get outside this morning. The snow came from the southeast and was wet and my darling wife had no TV as the dish was snow encrusted. I came to her rescue by putting on my work boots and taking a broom to the dish. Now I'm back inside with a fresh cup of coffee.

Our snow was more like four inches. Had about a two feet deep drift behind our truck this morning.

Sunshine mostly. My wife said she saw on facebook where our sheriff was out cleaning roads for anyone that needed it with his tractor. If all the roads were like the one that runs in front of my house nothing was needed.

I have a tractor with a 68" 3 point hitch pull type snowblower for the driveway and a 13 hp Ariens for the walkway. Sunshine isn't really an option for snow removal around here unfortunately.

Snow and ice can be fun if you have the right equipment. I hike almost daily in the winter either with snowshoes or microspikes if it's icy. The dogs like it too.

This was in December.

Man that's purty country Doublebass-7 . The climate we're moving to the end of the week gets really cold weather, and snow. It'll be easier on ole Rufus. His double coat causes him some grief down here.

Double, that’s some fine scenery there, and when I was younger I would dive right into country like that.
But at 77 with a very bad heart, I have to lay a heating pad on the floor to warm my feet and legs.
I hope you have many more years of winter fun.

Most of northern New England looks like this, it's nothing like the liberal cesspools in the 3 southern New England states. Your dog will definitely appreciate the colder climate. My dogs have overheating issues in the summertime if I work them too hard. I try to hike in areas with water. The thick black coats are great for duck hunting in cold, icy water.

It just reminds me of bidens cold dark winter prediction.

1: It makes for a very light world as in you need dark glasses or have to really squint when outside.
2: The younger ones really have fun playing in it.
3: It's pretty. Just go outside and see. It's something we don't get a lot of and gives us a break from the normal dry, drab, days of winter.
4: I posted it as an alternative to the constant doom and gloom that has become the normal thing on GBO and has been for months. If it's not politics or religion there isn't much here anymore. If that's your only  cup of tea just ignore me.

True, none of us can stop it. I'm trying to prolong it by staying in shape but I know my day is coming.

DB. Like that snowblower attachment. We run a 6 way scrape blade on a 40HP 4wd and have a great time. Fun to help out the neighbors.

As annoying as equipment breakdown in winter can be, cars battery, starter and snow blower not working when there is repeated larger snow drops with high  drifts, it keeps one in shape.
When a hard winter is continuous ,not just a little here and there, you adapt to it and going out in it becomes oddly pleasant.
This  has been a warm pissant winter with a large snow drop that totally melted, that sucks.

I am not sure if I want to go back to not having a snow-blower for the rental house I lived in and ran where I shoveled the parking lot approx. 30x40 by hand and by the first of March snow banks on the sides were so high I had difficulty throwing snow over them but back then there was a lot less sidewalk to shovel. :o
Same at Dad's place as I got older and i did all the shoveling but there the city would come by with a bucket and remove large piles that made it impossible for those coming out of the alley way to see around.

It is getting out of shape from not doing what one used to do , often, that makes one think one is falling apart.
I removed , rebuilt and enlarged a retaining wall, 12 ft. by approx. 3 ft. with 80 lb. blocks this summer; when I started I thought I was old and pathetic but by the
time I was finishing blocks did not seem so heavy, squatting and standing up seemed to be far, far easier.
It was getting to that point that probably took days longer than it did fifteen years ago.

Here is my snow removal equipment, don't need it much since we only see snow once every few years. Yeah that's a funny looking snow blower on back.

DB. Do you have a block heater? Those are nice in the cold. Like the medium tractors like yours as their more maneuverable in tight spots.

Some of my plowing adventures worked out better then others.  Been fused at for demoing a unseen rose bush covered in snow on a long winding gravel driveway and another time for not dismouting and using a shovel for a better job when I didn’t want to snug up to their vehicles with the blade. Gee whiz...

I used to clear about 2 miles of our road and neighbors driveways with my old dbl lunger JD and a 6 ft blade. I noticed a neighbor with a couple hundred ft drive hadn't been out in several days. I bladed down his drive around his car, backed up to his bumper and before I was out of sight he came out waving and went to work. I miss that. CHARLIE,  :( :(

I haven't needed a block heater because I have a 2 1/2 car attached garage that I keep the tractor in. The garage is insulated and the heat loss from the house keeps it quite a bit warmer than the outside temp. If it's -20 outside it will still be in the single digits in the garage. The tractor starts really easily, I've been impressed with it. It's pretty easy to maneuver in tight spots. The snowblower is a pull type so you just drive forward through the snow instead of backing up the whole time. It's nice because you never get snow in the face like you would snowblowing in reverse or using a front mount blower. Plus you don't get a sore neck like a traditional 3 point blower would give you driving in reverse.

It's definitely easy to run into things with a blade or a snowblower. You have to remember about that "tail swing" whenever you're turning or when things are buried under a couple feet of snow.

During the storm when I found the rose bush, the state crew ran over EVERY mailbox on our road for a 1/2 mile stretch. Didn’t miss a one.
