What hppened to that global warming thing.
« on: February 09, 2021, 01:49:54 PM »
It's supposed to hit 5 degrees here Saturday night. I can't remember the last time the thermometer dropped that low. Dang it, this is supposed to be the sunny southwest, not the frigid southwest. I would dig out my longhandle undies except I don't have any anymore. I better haul in some firewood. It may take the furnace and the woodburning stove both to stay warm for a few days.

I got out today for a haircut, but I'm gonna go back into hibernation for a month or so.   Brrrrr.

Weatherguessers! Today was supposed to be warm. We have freezing fog. Saturday night's low has been raised to 15 degrees and Sunday's dropped to 5. We are going to have a cold spell for sure but just how cold and when remains to be seen.

We're being told three degrees on Sunday night. 70% chance of snow. I sure hope those pipe heaters can keep up. They've been good so far but knock on wood. The coldest Ive ever been in was 45 below in the Arctic.
We had to put smudge pots under the vehicles to keep the oil warm. Block heaters couldn't keep up with it adding in the chill factor.

That's what you get for living over there in that valley. The cold settles in low spots. You are usually 2 or 3 degree warmer than we are in the summer and 2 or 3 degrees cooler in the cold spells. It doesn't cool down at night in the summer like it does up here on the cap either.

There is no such thing as a chill factor on inanimate items; there actually is no such thing as a chill factor period. Twenty or so years ago when the drastically reduced the supposed chill factor , a LARGE number of those who deal with such thing wanted to get rid of it , as it does not exist, period.

But they kept as weather men would not be able to  create a false panic without it.

I am not sure what you mean by "chill factor", but any circulating air (air passing near an object animate or inanimate) causes an increase in heat transfer from the hotter object to the cooler object.  That is why you fell colder when there is a "wind chill factor", the moving air causes you to lose heat faster.  This is why they put fans on stuff they want to cool faster; electronics, radiators etc..

Oh gosh that freezing wind up there was brutal. Got snow blind once, never forgot to wear the goggles after that.

Wind chill applies only to people and animals. The only effect wind chill has on inanimate objects, such as car radiators and water pipes, is to more quickly cool the object to the current air temperature. The object will NOT cool below the actual air temperature.
National Weather Service

IT does not cause an object to react at if it were less that the still air temp. ,therefore; wind chill doe NOT EXIST.
To say it is the equivalent of -x, y or z is asinine bs used to dupe the ingnorant public.
I just walked out side to get the mail and newspaper wearing a long sleeve shirt and socks, nothing more; it is -11 right now with a 6 mph wind. The BS Gov. wind chill calculator says that is the equivalent of -25.
I will gladly sell any one who believes that a bridge in Brooklyn.

I went out a few days ago when it was -18 without a jacket but fully clothed and I hustled to get the newspaper and mail quickly, real -18 is a world apart from the Wind Chill temp. they sucker people with.
Those extra 7 degrees make a world of difference.
At -20, things get nasty.

Wind blows hard, especially on the drive way/parking lot here, always from the North up a hill, which at times makes blowing snow miserable as I have to blow it into the wind which blows it back in my face.
I come in with icicles caked around my jacket by by the neck and on my cap.
If it gets too nasty , I dig out my circa 1969 Air Force parka but do not wear the hood up as then you cannot see. My glasses fog up and the fur around the hood turns solid with ice.
I just don't act like a girly-man because the U.S. Weather Service says I should with wind chill BS.

National Weather Service"

NO object will cool below the lowest ambient temperature!!!!  "Cooling" is an exchange of energy to achieve the lowest state of stored energy; hot things, animate and inanimate, will give up heat to the cooler object (air) until they reach equilibrium.  I anything is cooled BELOW the air temperature then put into the air it will COOL the air.

In addition any LIVE body will be dead before it (the temperature of the body) gets anywhere near freezing, 32 degrees F.  After that it will act like any other "object".

Congratulations on being so tough when it comes to cold weather. I am a wimp. I can damn sure tell the difference between, for example, 30 degrees with no wind and the same temperature with a wind and the harder the wind blows the colder that 30 degrees feels.

Weather channels are now reporting it like that. 30 degrees, feels like 25.
