PASTOR canceled. He had more ice than he did. He can't even get to his car let alone be able to get out of his drive way. We got 1/2 of ice here but it only got up to 24 again today. Looks like more coming in tomorrow evening and Tues. I took the rubber tip off of my metal cane to get to the car and it worked pretty darn good. Kroger was packed, one woman was actually running pushing a cart nd nearly hit me in my elect cart. CHARLIE.  ::)

Different areas and what people are accustomed to.  I see some people close everything because of far less than a foot of snow, while we breeze through a 2-3 foot accumulation..
Now, I see folks on the Gulf coast, while under a hurricane watch!  Folks around here being unfamiliar with such, would likely be hiding in their basements..at the first warning call.

It all depends upon what folks are accustomed to.  When I saw reports of that multi vehicle crash in Fort worth, I had no desire to ridicule, since there are obviously many drivers there who may not have ever met black ice. Actually, black ice can catch many folks around here by surprise..unless a driver observes very closely before he arrives at the hazard...usually a bridge..

In the old days, I mean late nineties, nineteen nineties not eighteen, around here smart people would put on chains but as few people have then nowadays that closing is a good idea.

We have had ice up here where on man can push a car along that is in park, due to sheets. literally sheets, of ice covering the ground.
Another reason I despise, hate, loath warm weather in winter; we can get rain followed by low twenties on saturated ground and that turns into truly ice covered ground.
There are pictures from the past, where people are ice skating on paved streets because the ice is that thick.

yup i remember laughing the year i lived in chicago. We got a foot of snow and the whole city shut down for 3 days. thats just another average snow storm up here and it doesnt even slow people down. We used to make good money up here when i was in high school. A 30 mile stretch of road between the air force base and the nearest good sized town was a money maker. Wed take dads 4x4 pickup and ride up and down it after every snow storm and charge people 10 bucks to pull them out of the ditch. Wed run that road during or right after a storm and pull a couple out turn around and pull a couple more out before we got back. The air base was full of people from the south that never drove in the snow and many didnt even know at that time what a snow tire was. It would slow down toward the end of the year when many got some experience. But it sure bought me LOTS of beer back and gas money back them. Like you said i guess its what your used to. Me? i get confused driving freeways. Even in a realitively small area like Green bay and im about paniced around detroit or chicago. We dont have a 4 lane road within a 100 miles of here and at least double that to find a 6 lane and i rarely go to those places. Pesonaly i feel ALOT safer driving down a ice covered 2 lane at 60 then i do trying to find the right exit on a freeway with the insane traffic around citys.  quote author=ironglows link=topic=288773.msg1099764131#msg1099764131 date=1613304356]

used to see alot of that up here when i was a kid. that and studded snow tires. They tore the roads up so bad that they were outlawed back in the 70s. I guess they figured it was easier to let us drive unsafe then to give us a few dollars more of detroits road construction money.

Studded tires are outlawed here, and chains may be...  In any case, with common sense prevailing, chains limit one to a maximum or 25-30 mph tops!
I liked studs, and kept them on my wife's cars, since they were night and day effective over regular snow tires, and nearly as effective as chains.
During the era of studded tire use, I did notice however, that there were places where people apparently purposely spun their studded tires, gouging the pavement.
I wondered then, just how long before they were outlawed..

big problem we have up here are snowmobiles with studded tracks Where trails cross roads theres 15 inch wide groves cut across the road. You can easily loose it hitting them if the roads are slippery.

MANY years ago in ILL I had studded snow tires, I was amazed how much more traction I had, then they were outlawed for tearing up the roads. After a whlie they came out. Kits were sold to put more in, but those small holes were usually full of crud so it didn't work. CHARLIE.  :D
