LOL, they were available to us but I wore the longer dress jacket.
Those Ikes were ugly.

Oh, forgot to add, I was Air Force.

Ike jackets..  Named of course, for Grn Eisenhower, who favored and adopted the design for all of us!

NO..they went out with the "brown boot Army" , around 1958..  The brown boot army got the nickname because we wore brown boots back then.
The training was in some ways, 'rougher and tougher'..compared to later years (excluding airborne and Spec Ops troops).  There also was less consideration for the individual troop.

Yeah I've heard that basic training is nowhere near as tough as it used to be.
I was in what the Army, Navy, and Marines called a chicken sh*t outfit (air force) and actually enjoyed basic training.
Especially after our first liberty to go into San Antonio, those civilians were the sloppiest, nastiest looking people I ever saw.
A few week of short haircuts and neat uniforms really made an impression on me.

Bug;
Don't ever consider your service as "Chicken***"  I like to think that much pride as many have in their own service, we need all working together, to complete the job.
Where would the toughest (Seals, Marine Raiders, Recon, Green Berets, Rangers etc), be, without the A10 Warthogs, the Apaches and the arms, munitions and supplies needed to prosecute their mission?

We MUST be a team...that is why I dislike so much, the new, divisive "pledge" the Biden bunch is forcing upon some of our military!

BTW:  San Antonio was considered a good duty station by lots of guys.  I was there for a few months ('56& '57), stationed @ Ft Sam Houston.  You likely took basic at Lackland.  A young friend, a Marine dog handler veteran of Afghanistan, trained on dogs with the Air Force in San Antonio..they being THE dog school for all branches.

I don't recall however, if it was at Lackland or Randolph!  I'll have to check with Tim, next time I see him !

You're "spot on" there, Lloyd!  I would like to see veterans on GBO take a bit of time to share memories..  No, we weren't all, "Sgt Rock of Easy Company"..but we all have memories, and may have crossed paths somewhere..

IG, I think you were in Germany long before I got there. I spent time in Mannheim and my old barracks have since been torn down. But sure remember good times there. Better than most places I was at.

Best time in the Army was a weekend spent at the Special Forces Underwater Operations school in Key West Florida.  It was a weekend party for the current class.  All the beer you could drink and all the lobster you could eat...!!!!

My time in Germany, I was stationed at Pirmasens, about six clicks from the French border...maybe 30 clicks south of Kaiserslautern.
I spent a lot of time travelling around the American sector of Germany.  Driving the Mannheim~Frankfort Autobahn, was a wild west show!  No speed limit of course, and most of the Porsche-Ferrari-Lambo driving crowd were competent.
.......But when they had a wreck...it and they, were spread along about a quarter mile of highway.

On my other vets post, I mentioned (and pictured) the IG Farben building in Frankfort, do you recall seeing it ?

I was there, from late 1962 to 1965.  The big dish in that area was 'weiner schnitzel', which is basically.veal cutlets.  I'm not into veal, so I usually settled for some kind of wurst..usually bratwurst, with maybe kartofeln (potato) or some kraut on the side.
Folks are sometimes surprised that I never tasted that German beer, while living there for 2.5 years.  ..But being a complete abstainer, i never tried it, nor missed it !

Bet you haven't forgotten how slippery the cobblestone einfahrts and ausfahrts to the autobahn were, when a rain came after a few sunny days.

The Kaserne I was stationed at, had a name change after I left.  It went from D'Isley Kaserne to Husterhoeh kaserne.
I found several videos on Youtube to refresh memories.  This one features the town..and Kaserne...
I see my old billet in a snowy picture..  Must be a later shot, since it has a couple missiles in front of it!  My Kaserne was a small one, about 5,000 troops..with one, consolidated mess.  I hate consolidated messes..we always ate better in the field, than back at post.

They must have changed the class A uniform just before I joined. We wore the full length green dress uniform. I was in Germany in 1960. Baumholder. Smith Barracks.

Found on Youtube... this old film somebody shot at Baumholder in 1965, may bring back some memories..

We used to get up to Baumholder at times.   ..Not at the town or barracks, but we completed many FTXs around Baumholder

Thank you IG. Some of the pictures I remember well. The bottom basement was housed our company lounge with foosball, pool table and jukebox. Ah the good ole days.
