Texas residents will not be burdened by "skyrocketing" energy bills following the deadly winter storm that caused widespread blackouts last week, Gov. Greg Abbott said.

Abbott announced on Sunday that he is addressing the "skyrocketing energy bills that resulted from a temporary spike in the energy market" with members of the legislature to make sure residents aren't held financially responsible.

As the state reels under one of the worst electricity outages in U.S. history, Abbott and members of the legislature will calculate the total cost of these bills and "find ways that the state can help reduce this burden."

In the meantime, the Public Utility Commission, at the direction of the governor, will temporarily restrict providers from issuing invoices to customers. It also issued a temporary moratorium on customer disconnections for nonpayment.

According to the governor, the pause will give the state extra time to develop a solution on how to handle these bills.

“Texans who have suffered through days of freezing cold without power should not be subjected to skyrocketing energy bills,” Abbott told reporters Sunday.

The plunging temperatures caused Texans to turn up their heaters, including many inefficient electric ones. Demand spiked to levels normally seen only on the hottest summer days when millions of air conditioners run at full tilt.

To ease the burden on power grids straining to meet extreme demand for heat and electricity, Texas, along with a slew of other impacted states, implemented rolling blackouts.

By Wednesday, 46,000 megawatts of power were offline statewide — 28,000 from natural gas, coal and nuclear plants and 18,000 from wind and solar, according to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which operates the state’s power grid.

The staggering imbalance between Texas’ energy supply and demand also caused prices to skyrocket from roughly $20 per megawatt-hour to $9,000 per megawatt-hour in the state’s freewheeling wholesale power market.

Abbott acknowledged every source of power had been compromised. But he accused ERCOT of misleading the public with messages that the grid was ready for the storm.

“It’s especially unacceptable when you realize what ERCOT told the state of Texas,” Abbott said.

The people opted into that program so they would get their electric cheaper but were also  told that it could be much higher during high demand periods. So if I understand it right, they got the benefit of cheaper electric and when there is a demand problem they want the gov. or electric co. to bail them out. That was part of the risk of choosing that plan.  Do I understand it right?

On the other side are the power co. responsible because they were not  able to supply power as they should.?

YES.  Just like corporations, leave us alone until something goes wrong - then bail us out when it does!!!!

28,000 from the 76% that is from gas, coal, and nuclear sources, 18,000 from the 24% that is solar and wind. In that context solar and wind didn't perform all that well..

What is an inefficient electric heater? Unless they are using light bulbs for heat the amount of watts in equals btu's out. Like 99% efficient, not cheap to use because of the cost/KW but the most efficient form of heat.

Whoever published those figures conveniently left out certain issues...Of 46,000 megawatts of power that went offline, 28,000 were from conventional power plants.

They neglected however, to explain how many thousand megawatts are normally supplied by conventional means vs how much is   supplied by wind and sun..

A part of the cause was when the ercot idiots issued orders for rolling blackouts they didn't pull their heads out of their nether regions and the Permian Basin where natural gas is produced and requires electricity was shut down.

With electricity being deregulated there are/were electric wholesalers offering consumers electric plans where they purchased their electricity direct from the wholesalers and were subject to the immediate price per KWH which during the power outages increased dramatically. For Texans that chose to gamble and not have a buffer through a retailer they threw the dice and lost. Not saying it's right, but that's what happened. Not real different than taking your money to Vegas and counting on rolling a winner more often than losing.

"Biden Refused Abbott’s Request That He Sign Major Disaster Declarations For 177 Texas Counties After Biden’s DOE Allegedly Refused To Allow Texas Power Plants To Operate At 100% Capacity"

Great story from "Info Wars" you know the "entertainment site" as described by Alex Jones.  Of course the Texas power grid has set itself up to be independent of the Fed's, and the energy dept in fact gave an emergency waiver of emissions rules to allow power generators to operate at max capacity.  I am sure you will dispute this because a good conspiracy needs believers.

Yeah, alot of people- -people like progressive NWB - - don't wan't to realize is that Texas gets wicked hot, really hot often with dead calm conditions and their E-grid meets the challenge, but not with this Arctic Geo Storm!? Which also affected the heart of Trump country north of Texas as well.

Perhaps it will give people a second thought, before jumping into some customer-owned utility scheme, in order to save a couple bucks per month..
