Ruger Vaquero 45LC or Marlin 1894CB. I want to work up some loads using AA1680 and I'm going to have to use cut down 454 Casull data to figure out a starting load. Accurate lists the 454 starting loads in the range of 27-33 depending on bullet. I figure I'll start at 18 or 20 with a 250gr GC LFP and see. I might run out of case capacity before I do any good. What do ya think? I'm wanting to load for that 24" barrel on the Marlin and thought a powder a little slower than H110 might be worth trying. Then again, maybe this will be my last post till I get out of physical therapy and learn how to type with a pencil in my mouth :shock:

I'd go straight to the horses mouth, there may be a good reason that 1680 isnt listed for 45 colt, or maybe just doesent work as well as they thought it should, or even not had time to try.

This way you get to keep your fingers! :wink:

:shock :? Why not just use 45 LC loading data. Want something hotter? Get a 44mag 480 ruger or a 454 cassull.

bgjohn, there are a lot of powders suitable for a specific purpose that aren't published, and if you can make one powder work for two cartridges, it sometimes makes things more convenient. Sometimes it's just fun to experiment, if you can be reasonably sure it can be done safely.
Of course a new gun is ALWAYS nice, but sometimes the budget only allows for an new can of powder, and sometimes not even that, so you got to try what you've got.

Don't waste your time trying to get 1680 to work in the 45 Colt. It's way too slow. You'll get much better performance out of Accurate's #9 or H110. As for action strength, I would bet the Ruger can withstand more than the Marlin but there's no need to push the limits of either past what the load books recommend. If you need more, buy a 45-70.

After I started this thread I found a burn rate chart and looked up 1680. It's further down the line from 110 than I thought. I think I'll shelve that idea. I am using it very successfully in 357 Rem Max and thought I'd give it a try. If one of my cohorts has any 5744 I might try that. It's a little slower than H110 but not so dramatically as the 1680.... maybe, just maybe, I'll do a little more research before posting it to the forum next time

Accurate Arms Manual #2 lists data for 5744, and Lyman 48th lists data for IMR-4227. 4227 is just listed right below, on the fast side of, 1680 in speed. SO, there might be potential for the use of 1680. It might not produce the greatest velocity, but you might just luck into some accuracy. I will give up velocity any day or the week to get better accuracy. I use WC-680 (burn rate of 1680) in my 44 Magnum. Velocity suffers, but accuracy is good at 50 yards from a scoped SRH. :-D Its funny that you list WC 680 BCB cause that is what he has, Iknow cause I have half that jug he bought from GI brass. We both like to try new things but don't wanna blow him up because then I'd hafta find a new shootin pardner, He is kinda nutz but if you stay behind him he dose always point the open end downrange. :wink:

I've shot at Hooten a couple of times, I really enjoyed the time spent there, wonderful place, lotta work gone into that. I think I enjoyed the "musem" almost as much as the shooting. I'd like to weekend there sometime and get in on all the shooting. I started Cowboy shootin' at Knob Creek so that's where I guess I'd call home, even if I havent been up there in almost a year. Casey County Sportsmen's Club has a pretty good shoot, as well as the folks over in Glasgow.
We'll have to get together sometime soon and burn some powder.

I'm glad ta hear you're agreeable, now I've something to look forward to. I like getting to meet and shoot with the folks I've meet on here. So far they've all been great folks that were enjoyable to be around. Made some good friends and even met some relatives!!
