Youngest Son Sent Me A Eotec 512.A65
« on: March 30, 2021, 02:21:30 PM »
My youngest decided I needed it for my birthday. Shot one on an AK.
This one looks pretty handy, never had a holographic sight before, but I hear their good.

Nice!

I liked the one I had years ago OK but it sure went thru batteries. I hope yours uses standard AA or AAA batteries. Whatever size it was mine took were very expensive.

AA, over a thousand hours if you use lithium batteries.

i agree with bill. Battery life on the old ones wasnt good. Dont know about the newer ones though. I had one on an ar for about 5 years. Bottom line is nothing is faster on target. Faster then even a red dot for me. Down side was in comparison to an aimpoint they werent as durable and like i said battery life was lame. Now durability couldnt be proven by me. Mine worked fine right up to the day i sold it. But in rough use they tended to break more then the aimpoints. Another down side to them is you can leave an aimpoint on 24/7 for over 3 years on a set of batteries, sig romeos and the new vortex are the same. Acogs dont have batterys so are on all the time too. An aimpoint needs to be turned on. Fine for police about to bust into a house. But for a home defense gun i dont want to be fumbling around naked in the middle of the night under pressure trying to find the button to turn on a sight.

I had a new Vortex SPARC-AR on it, and loved it. One AA battery, with at least 2,000 hrs life, very compact and clear, with a 12 hour automatic shutoff.

The Eotec with 2 AAA lithium batteries, about 1,000 hrs, with a 4 or 8 hour automatic shutoff.

The Sparc has great co-witnessing with BUSs. The Eotec has outstanding co-witness with BUSs and seems to come on target faster.

Seems to me way back in the late fifties they were not legal to use at that time if I remember right but I also see the Indian veteran on Life below zero next generation has one on his small game pistol he carries in his pocket. I may look into getting one for my Ruger MK 3 Hunter.

auto shut off is something i wouldnt want. It could shut off on you when you need it most and cause you to get flustered in the heat of the moment. Now sig romeos cover that problem. They shut off after just 3 minutes of inactivity but turn on instantly on there own with just the slightest movement of the gun. that way you can leave a gun sitting in a room and as soon as you touch it the sight turns on on its own. It works great and i have more of those romeos then all the rest of the dot sights i have combined. I see vortex has the new crossfire redot that is replacing the sparc. It is like a aimpoint in that you can leave it turned on and battery life is measured in years. That said i have a coin battery sparc and a aaa version and they have been reliable tough sights. Out of all of the red dots make mine a aaa sig.

I don't see pushing a button on an optic, anymore distracting than pulling a charging handle.

my guns are loaded. Without a round in the chamber its not loaded. Now you have been under stress so maybe you can handle it but 98 percent of those here never have been in any kind of a situation like that and but naked in the dark with an armed intruder or two would be dead before they had the
presents of mind to rack a round in the chamber switch off a saftey let alone fumbling around looking for a switch in the dark. Even i would stuggle because i have many different sights on different ars. Every one of my 16 ars has a mag in it a round in the chamber and either the sight is on all the time or is motion activated or its tritium even when locked in the  safe. My main defense ar has the saftey flipped to fire too. Only ones in the house are the wife and i and i sure dont want her searching for a safety or trying to remember to turn a switch on. My safety is between my ears. You will not find an unloaded gun in this house. Every gun is ready to go. But to each his own.

I had to look it up as I had no idea what one was. I have no idea of their quality or anything about them for that matter. I do know if I were you I would give my son a big hug for thinking you are worth that much money.  ;D

I had two.....an Eotech and a knock off. The Eotech I sold back to the company during a recall. The other I still have. I l liked the Eotech; it was clear and rugged enough for my use. I never did find out what it was that they were fixing. The knock off; I kept it and it has been trouble free. Both sights were.
My only complaint is that they are bulky.
At least they are bulkier than other holo sights. I can (and do) live with that.

Linda and I are the only people in our house also, but none of my long  guns are chambered. With the light triggers on them I wouldn't consider a chambered round with the safety intentionally off.
Startled out of sleep that's a scary thought, but its your choice.

Finally got to the range yesterday. State Parks Chief invited me to a range that for eleven years I taught classes at. Hadn't been there in almost 30 years, it was the same with more concrete.
I use a 36 yard zero, and he set me up himself using a range finder, and an eotech target.

1st 2 rounds were less than a 1/4th inch apart, and 1 1/4 inch left, and 1/4 inch high.
8 click adjustment and next 2 rounds 1/4 inch high.
2 clicks down, and a 3 shot cluster all touching pretty much dead center.
Close enough for me, and this Eotec is faster than my Sparc AR.
