RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia's highest court ruled Thursday that the city of can take down two statues of Confederate generals, including one of Robert E. Lee that became the focus of a violent White nationalist rally in 2017.

The state Supreme Court overturned a Circuit Court decision in favor of a group of residents who sued to block the city from taking down the Lee statue and a nearby monument to fellow Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. Charlottesville's city council voted to remove both.

White supremacist and neo-Nazi organizers of the August 2017 "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville said they went to the city to defend the statue of Lee. They clashed with counterprotesters before a man plowed his car into a crowd of people, killing a woman. The Jackson statue was erected in Jackson Park in 1921 and the Lee statue was erected in Lee Park in 1924.

In Thursday's decision, State Supreme Court Justice Bernard Goodwyn said both statues were erected long before the passage of a law regulating the "disturbance of or interference with" war memorials or monuments.

"In other words, (the law) did not provide the authority for the City to erect the Statues, and it does not prohibit the City from disturbing or interfering with them," Goodwyn wrote.

Lee and Jackson...a couple fine men, of whom those "highest court" judges would not be good enough to tie either Lee's or Jackson's combat boots !!

Since neither Lee, nor Jackson wore "combat boots" perhaps these "judgers" could have their shoe shine rags could be confiscated.

Somehow I knew that would come up, even as I typed it... but hoped the message was more impoortant than boot terminology, and nobody would be so picayune concerning diction..   ;D

My reasoning was this..since both wore boots and both were often involved in combat..any set of boots they were wearing would be combat boots!  Seemed logical to me at the time..

I doubt they wore moccasins or bedroom slippers into combat..
and Gators weren't available to them back then!  ;)  ;D

     In any case, here is a painting of Jackson and Lee in their combat boots..just scroll down;

LOL, Yeah, even riding boots have become "combat boots". "Perception" is everything. Truth? Not so much.

  Sadly, I knew that was coming when I wrote it !  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Combat boots, just like "fatigues' and "BDOs", do not remain static.  In WW1 the combat boots worn, were "high tops"..  Tall boots laced nearly to the knee.. lower shoes sometimes worn with "spats"..   Come WW2, the boots were shorter, and had a leather band with 2 buckled straps about the top.

Today's combat boots are different from the ones  I wore back in the 50s and 60s...

Ah, the quest to never be wrong, is such a struggle, even when the topic is so trivial. ::)

Here is a couple a pics. The "combat boots" with spurs, are an actual pair that belonged to Robert E Lee.
The other pic is Stonewall Jackson his own self. Hes wearing knee high "combat boots".
In the day they were called "riding boots", for obvious reasons.

The first known use of the term "combat boots" was 1944. 8)

boots smoots!! Who gives a dam about that. Whats sad and should be the center of this is the liberals tearing down history. You all know im not a fan of civil war bickering but thats not even what this is about. As much as i hate that war still being used in arguements it was part of our history and many brave men on both sides died for what they believed in and are american heros no matter what side of the war they were on.

..As I said back in post #3..I knew full well somebody would come up with a petty argument. Thus, it was a little test, to see how soon somebody would bite.. ;)  ;D
I was of course, well aware that the boots of the 1860s were not comparable to today's combat boots, but didn't figure that was necessary to point out in a post concerning the destruction of historical monuments by the "cancel culture".
..But of course, each has their own 'bone to pick'.

Its about someone always insisting on being right, regardless of how trivial, and is absolutely hilarious to watch.
Doesn't matter what, just throw a dart, and go with where ever it lands.

The dart landed on boots, and you've twisted every hogs ear here, tryin to justify your perception of Lee and Jacksons boots.  Their just  boots.  8)
