Shoooo-weeeeee!
« on: April 09, 2021, 02:01:59 AM »
Well I've got a good sized skunk
that the neighbor's free roaming
cats fought with, and needless to
say the whole mess happened here,
and about 1/4 of the side yard is
reeking, and the scent is partially
in the house from the window
being cracked a small amount.
The only gold star is that the
kitty's are pretty coated and will
bring a nice reward home for
allowing the kitty's to roam.

So, is there a way to dispatch
skunks without getting "it"
until I can get a sleeper and a
pole?

CCI standard, behind & between the ears..  Actually a .177 or .22 air pellet can do it as well.  although at close range, you may want to engage from the front.   ;)  ;D

Yeah, slip a bullet into the brain and that should shut down the skunk gun.

If he's in a trap walk up on its blind side and ease it into a trash bag. He won't spray if he can't see you and you handle the trap easy.
Put him into the back of your pickup, and go to the country. I've did it many times with no problems.

I use a gamo 22 cal pellet rifle for squirrel and skunk control, fairly quiet and doesn't bother the neighbors.

A sure way for a skunk to spray is shooting it in the head.
You have better than a 50/50 chance the skunk wont spray is shooting it in the chest.

22 mag in the spine front half of the body. Cutting the wiring from his fire control group to his main weapon. A live trap works fine too. I hold an old blanket between me and the cage. Shuffle my feet forward till my toes touch the trap then cover it with the blanket and wrap him up for transport. Word to the wise....don't peek around the blanket.

I was reading an outdoor story a few years ago and the author had heard that if you could hit them at the base of the tail with a centerfire round their squirter would be paralyzed.
Well he tried it and said he filled the entire valley with attar of skunk.

My sister-in-law has live trapped probably a dozen skunks from under their house or kid's playhouse outside. If the skunk can't raise its tail it cannot spray. The Havahart type live traps baited with hardboiled eggs or cat food work great and they aren't as able to easily spray.
Once the skunk is caught she takes a long pole to lift the trap up and dunk it into a water filled garbage can and drowns the skunk. She's had many friends and acquaintances comment that it seems so inhumane and "Can't you just take it out in the country and turn it loose?" Her reply is "May I call you to come do that with the next one I catch?" So far no takers. Buy or borrow a live trap. Shooting with anything is gonna be a problem one way or another.

This is probably good advice. :)

.
When my grandson returned from Iraq, and was given a choice of residences at the Marine's NCO housing at Paris Island's Laurel Bay area, he chose a home backed up by the woods.
He had a rear flood light, which pretty well covered the area right up to the woods, perhaps 30 yards.  He started getting nocturnal visitors..coon, skunks & 'possums.
He placed sardines in the can, out at the edge of the lighted area. Head shots got them regularly.  His air rifle is a Beeman switch barrel..both .177 and .22.  He said the .22 was more effective.

Since one of his regular duties in Iraq, was overwatch, getting those critters was a "chip shot" for him !
