Minneapolis officials give update after deadly shooting
A police chief in Brooklyn Center outside of Minneapolis released the body camera footage Monday showing the officer-involving shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright, categorizing the event as an "accidental discharge."

Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said he believed the so far unidentified officer intended to reach for a Taser but mistakenly grabbed her service weapon and deployed a single bullet.

Both the chief and Mayor Mike Elliott declined to release the officer's name at this time but said the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension should be releasing information about all involved parties soon.

At least 500 Minnesota National Guard personnel are activated across the Twin Cities Monday in support of Operation Safety Net during the trial for former Minneapolis office Derek Chauvin – a number that’s expected to increase amid unrest since Wright's death. The Minneapolis area erupted in looting and riots late Sunday after a female officer fatally shot Wright during a traffic stop just 10 miles from where Chauvin had Floyd pinned to the pavement last May.

National Guard officials said they expect more than 1,000 guards-members deployed across the state by the end of Monday.

Mayors from St. Paul and Minneapolis declared states of emergency and 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. CT curfews in their respective cities. Gov. Tim Walz has also announced a curfew for the same time parameters throughout Hennepin, Ramsey and Anoka counties.

Speaking to reporters Monday afternoon, Walz was emphatic not only about the need for change but in his warning that violent or destructive protesters would be held accountable.

"For those who choose to go out and ... to exploit these tragedies for destruction or personal gain, you can rest assured that the largest police presence in Minnesota history and coordination will be prepared," Walz said. "You will be arrested. You will be charged. And there will be consequence for those actions. It’s not debatable, you’re not making the case. You’re hurting the case. You’re undermining the grief, and you hear it from families time and time again. Don't you dare step into our space where we're trying to enact change through our system."

In a statement released Sunday, Brooklyn Center Police said that officers had stopped an individual shortly before 2 p.m. After determining the driver had an outstanding warrant, police tried to arrest him. But the driver reentered the vehicle and drove away, police said.

An officer fired at the vehicle, striking the driver. Police said the vehicle traveled several blocks before crashing into another vehicle. A female passenger sustained nonlife-threatening injuries.

FAST FACTS
Operation Safety Net was already expected to enter Phase 3 ahead of closing statements and jury deliberation in the Chauvin trial.
That plan was expedicted by the civil unrest following Daunte Wright's fatal shooting by police.
Gannon also detailed how officers outside the Brooklyn Center Police Department headquarters were pelted with frozen soda cans and cement blocks. One Hennepin County sheriff's deputy was struck in the head and went to the hospital. The chief said he made the call to cut lights in the building to prevent officers confronted by demonstrators from being backlit and becoming targets.

Tensions are already high in the region as the trial for Chauvin, the former Minneapolis officer charged in Floyd’s death, continues into its third week. Judge Peter Cahill on Monday denied the defense's motion to sequester the jury amid the civil unrest across Hennepin County following Wright's death because it's a separate case. He said the jury in Chauvin's trial won't be sequestered until at least next week when closing statements are expected.

Brooklyn Center Community Schools were closed for in-person instruction and shifted to virtual learning Monday, as Superintendent Carly Baker recognized "our community experienced trauma and we need the time and space to process."

Operation Safety Net leaders are expected to hold a separate press conference to provide another public safety update around 2 p.m. CT.

When asked about last night’s response by Brooklyn Center police to protests in the area, Harrington said: “West Metro command team mobilized to stop damage to property, windows being broken and rocks being thrown at officers. They used chemical munitions as I understand it to try and move the crowd back farther away so that the officers would take less rocks and less projectiles and there would be less damage to the building.

“In an ideal world, we would have loved to have had a conversation with the organizers beforehand to talk about, where could they protest and where should they be and how can we facilitate their anguish and their grief being expressed. That protest came upon us, frankly, by surprise …. We were expecting the group that had protested at the crime scene to continue to protest, but the size of the group and the intent of the group took, I think, the command staff … by surprise and that triggered the response that you saw."

Daunte Wright's family has retained prominent civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump and co-counsel Jeff Storms, according to a press release from Crump's office.

In a statement provided by his office, Crump said: "Daunte Wright is yet another young Black man killed at the hands of those who have sworn to protect and serve all of us - not just the whitest among us. As Minneapolis and the rest of the country continue to deal with the tragic killing of George Floyd, now we must also mourn the loss of this young man and father. This level of lethal force was entirely preventable and inhumane. What will it take for law enforcement to stop killing people of color? The growing number of Black men and women who have been killed or harmed by police is far too hefty a price for the equality we are seeking. We join Daunte’s family in demanding justice for him, and holding those responsible for his death accountable.”

When the people, and business owners, collectively get tired of that crap, they'll put a stop to it.
Or, they'll more likely sit on their asses, and hope somebody else will.

They have their city just the way they want it.  If not, they would change it, or move out.  They did this to themselves.  No self-respecting officer of the law should tolerate this.  I say either LEAVE or lift the ban on shooting belligerent protesters and looters.

Republicans in Minn. are trying to pass a -- stand you ground law -- but DFL, keeps stopping that.

In Minn. depending on where you live, ( i.e. Twin Cities)   you really do not have the right to defend your property.

At that Twin Cities cops, over the decades, have a bad habit of shooting unarmed people, or in one case twenty some years ago, a gent successfully took back his car, disarmed the hijacker and defended his wife from an armed car hijacker and the LEO drives up pulls out his shot gun and shoots him dead without saying a word.

IF that happened today , that officer would probably go through legal hell but back then the board that looked as such things found him guilty of nothing.

The problem there is, who did the officer think was the perp? That's happened before in a CCW situation.
They see a guy with a gun and they shoot him. This happened in Albuquerque, thank goodness the good guy didn't die.

Back then the dispatcher was saying -- the person with the gun is not the perp. -- repeatedly.
The cop said he did not hear the dispatch (it was the victim, who had called the cops in the first place.)

Even then, the cop offered no warning and he was standing beside his wife while he had the hijacker spread eagle on the ground.

As I said, today, the cop would be in a world of hurt, and would probably be convicted of manslaughter same as the Somali Cop who killed the British woman a few years back.
Of all the killing the wrong/unarmed people that have happened up here, the dope head who died, is like violent mourning over garbage where others would have made at least a bit of sense.
I wish it were because of enough is enough, but that is/was all Political BS, probably pre-planned just waiting for a excuse.

Should still be.

I'm reminded of the round black woman on
the news some years back that was asked
why they were looting,  and she replied that
she was trying to feed her churrens,  saying
that with an armload of Nike shoes.
The reporter pointed that out, and didn't get
a reply as the woman ran off with her
stolen shoes

It "used to be" LEO's could/would shoot a fleeing suspect.  You run, you die tired.  If you live by the gun and the knife, you die by the gun or the knife.  Idk if that is a movie line or some summation of life in these United States.

Enforcing law cannot be "fun" in any way most Americans view a job they can work effortlessly and still get paid.  I mean that in the way that a job which you love is not work and by NO MEANS do I infer that law enforcement is effortless.  Enforcing law brings the worst of humanity into full focus and taints their view of everyone else.  Trust NO ONE and have a plan to KILL EVERYONE.

Mostly, LE is thankless.  Without a doubt, they HEROS, every one of them.  Standing in the rain, directing traffic around some bastard's wreck following an illegal lane change on a night that has killed a family of five, or a wrong way drunk that has tasted his last drink and eaten his dash on the front end of a semi, or a neighbor stabbing another, or the drug infested rant of some junkie, or the BILLION other hard times they are sent out to investigate, mitigate, validate, eradicate (I did not know there were so many words that ended in "ate").
