Last Sunday's hike

We had some nice weather last Sunday so I hit another mountain in NH. There was still 2 to 3 feet of snow on the trails in the woods but once I got above treeline the sun had melted most of the snow.

Yep.  I'm no fan of the snow, but that is some pretty country.

Nice pictures!  Nothing more tranquil, peaceful, or scenic than a mountain stream, with snow on the ground. Especially with some hemlocks along the stream banks.  I could sit by a stream like that for hours and watch the water roll by.  That would be an awesome place to get some photos from a drone.

I think I asked you before, but what part of NH is that? Always wanted to travel up through Vermont, NH, and Maine. Had plans to do that, but my wifes brain injury changed that. Maybe some day.

How you get that funny white grass to grow up there? We don't have that color grass down here in Alabama, ours is green.

I was in Grafton County in the White Mountain National Forest which is the central part of the state, I was fairly close to the Vermont border. There's a scenic byway in that area you would like, it's called the Kancamagus highway. It cuts through the White Mountains from the Vermont border all the way over to near the Maine border. Lots of good scenic vistas on that road. Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine are all Constitutional carry so bring your guns if you come.

The temps were in the 50's that day so I wore a t-shirt for the entire hike. The trail I took was over 7 miles round trip with 2500 feet of elevation gain/loss so I was still sweating like a pig in those temps. Luckily the snow was still firm enough that I could wear microspikes instead of snowshoes. Snowshoes are even more of a workout.

Never heard of that highway, but I'm sure I would like it.  I love scenic highways that wind through mountains. Thanks for the info. One thing I always wanted to do up there is ride the cog rail train up to Mt. Washington.  Yes I'll bring my carry gun with me. Its nice to be able to travel in states that don't require a permit, or at least recognize my state of Pa's carry permit.

Found all these photos along the Kamcamagus highway. Looks like an awesome road to travel.  Definitely have to put that in the bucket list.

The Cog Railway is pretty fun, I took one of the steam trains up a couple years ago. It's impressive to say the least. That mountain has some amazing history. There is an also an auto road that you can drive up on the opposite side of the mountain from the Cog Railway. That's fun and scary at the same time because there are places where you don't want to go off the road, people have died. I prefer the train. I plan on hiking Washington this summer too. It's definitely one of the more strenuous hikes in my area. There's one trail going up Huntington ravine that is considered the most challenging and dangerous in the east as far as hiking goes.

You will love the Kancamagus highway, lots of nice views and places to pull over and fish. I do a lot of hiking in that area, the east end of that highway is only about 20 minutes from me. I've never hunted over that way because I have so many good spots near my house but a friend of mine shot a moose in that area.

I use to ride The Kanc about four or five times a year. It was one of my motorcycle loops up there.

There's a nice little warm up hike off of The Kanc called Potash Mountain....only about 4.5 miles in and out, and less than 3000 feet. My wife and i would hike this in Lady Slipper season and Potash is loaded with Lady Slipper orchids. That would be around June 10th or so (which coincides with peak black fly season. Ha-ha!). Thing about Potash mountain is the really outstanding 360* views from the top _ _ the Sandwich Range and Mt. Passconaway to the south,  and the Whites to the north. Lot of bang for the buck.

I hiked Potash in the winter a couple years ago, you're right about those views. Probably the best view of Passaconaway out there and a great view of the Tripyramids. I also hiked Mt. Hedgehog which is near there.

Yes didn't think about having to drive through the republic of NY.

It's worth it to loop around NYC, maybe take I-88 then head north to avoid Massachusetts as well. That way you're only driving through one communist state. MA and NY require you to have the gun in a locked case in the trunk unloaded of course and the ammo can't be in the same case. I avoid those states like the plague but I do occasionally have to go to Mass.
