LIVE UPDATES: Indianapolis FedEx facility shooting leaves 8 dead, attacker’s identity unknown
FedEx says it is ‘deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of our team members’

Indianapolis police official updates on mass shooting at FedEx warehouse
A mass shooting at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis late Thursday night has left at least eight people dead and several others injured, police say.

The shooter who opened fire at the facility near the city’s airport also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Genae Cook. That person as of midday Friday has yet to be publicly identified, but the FBI says it is assisting in the search of his home.

Police say five people have been hospitalized following the gunfire, but are in stable condition. FedEx employees are among the dead, the company has confirmed.

Vice President Kamala Harris is speaking out about the shooting:

“Yet again we have families in America that are grieving the loss of their family members because of gun violence,” she told reporters Friday. “There is no question this violence must end and we are thinking of the families that lost their loved ones. And the president will speak later about the case.”

Randal Taylor, the chief of Indianapolis Police, has called the mass shooting a “senseless crime that will not soon leave our memory.”

“This is unacceptable for Indianapolis,” he told reporters during a midday press conference. “Our IMPD officers went towards danger as they typically do and when they arrived on the scene they found something that really no one should see. We have all shaken by this heinous act.”

Craig McCartt, the deputy chief of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, says based on interviews with witnesses, the shooter came to the FedEx facility and “got out of his car and pretty quickly started some random shooting outside the facility."

“There was no confrontation with anyone that was there, there was no disturbance, there was no argument,” McCartt said. “He just appeared to randomly start shooting and that began in the parking lot and then he did go into the facility for a brief period of time before he took his own life.”

Police have not identified the suspect, but the FBI says its personnel are currently assisting in a search of his home.

An Indianapolis City-County councilwoman is calling on Gov. Eric Holcomb and state lawmakers "to address gun violence" in the wake of the FedEx facility mass shooting.

Ali Brown, a Democrat, wrote on her Facebook page Friday morning that "the conversation will be tough, but we must get a firm grip of the situation and the collective epidemic — and if that means passing background check legislation, banning automatic rifles, and advocating for other common-sense gun control measures, let’s get that done immediately.

"We must mourn the Hoosiers whose lives were cut way too short, but we must also take action to prevent another tragedy like this from happening on Indiana soil," she added. "Let’s also remember to thank our Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the first responders for bravely taking what could likely be the worst call they’ll receive in their careers."

FedEx, in an official statement, says it is “deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of our team members following the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility in Indianapolis.”

The shipping company adds that it is “fully cooperating” with authorities in the investigation and called the shooting a “senseless act of violence”.

Craig McCartt, the deputy chief of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police, told NBC’s “Today” Show that the shooter “has not been positively identified” by law enforcement.

“We actually know very little at this point in time. We are still working the scene, we are still processing the scene,” McCartt said. “We still have crime lab technicians who are out doing that work. And after that is done then we work on the identification of the victims and the suspect.”

McCartt added that all of the victims who were injured are now in stable condition. Four of those victims, he says, suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds.

The shooter is not believed to have gotten far inside of the FedEx facility, he also mentioned.

“The security measures they had in place inside... did what they were supposed to do,” McCartt said.

Levi Miller, who works at FedEx building where the shooting unfolded, tells NBC’s "Today" Show that he saw a male “hooded figure” with an “AR in his hand” last night while he was sitting on a bench near the facility’s parking lots.

“He started shouting and then he started firing at random directions,” Miller said, recalling how he heard nearly two dozen gunshots. “I thought he saw me, and so I immediately ducked for cover.”

Miller added that one of his friends witnessed an individual who “pulled out a gun from his truck to try to engage the shooter and he died because of it.”

Miller also said a co-worker informed him that the shooter was a “well-known worker at this facility”.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, in a series of tweets, says the city’s residents this morning are being “confronted with the horrific news of yet another mass shooting, an act of violence that senselessly claimed the lives of eight of our neighbors.”

“As law enforcement works to learn more about this tragedy, our prayers are with the families of those whose lives were cut short,” he added.
