Keeping fish
« on: April 29, 2021, 06:25:48 PM »
I had to stop at the bad place to
get some items today, and while I
was there I stopped in the sporting
goods to look at fishing stuff, something
I haven't done in a long time.
I thought I'd see what fish baskets cost
now, and might get a new one sometime
later.  I was surprised to see that there
wasn't any kind of anything to keep fish
you'd caught such as a fish basket or
stringer.
Don't people keep fish anymore and
clean and eat them, or know how to
clean them and cook them?

I keep them all, no sense in paying for a fishing license and getting no meat out of the deal.

Got my hunting license yesterday. They would not issue me a fishing license as mine had not expired yet. I guess I need to forget so they get more money from a ticket? Guy said he could issue me a lost license for $4. Also could not get deer tags yet.

Oklahoma has life time hunting and fishing very expensive but when you get to 65 you can get one pretty cheap when I got mine they were 10.00 now I think they are around 50 it is called a final fee I don't care for the sound of that. Most boats has a live well to keep fish or you can make your own stringer we used to make our own with a short piece of light chain and metal shower  hanger hooks. And EBay has them listed for 2.00 to 25.00 depending what you like from a plastic stringer cords to baskets. Lot of things on ebay you cant find in the shops in town.

JMO-  I only use a stringer or a
basket for bank fishing. If I'm in a
boat, any legal keeper fish go on
ice immediately. I'm not a fan of
livewells.

There was some lake there that a friend was

many trophy sized line busters, but supposedly
there was some kind of military pollution that
was extremely toxic and no fish could be
retained at all

One close to here is full of PCB from the
the old AFB that used to be on the far
shore of the lake.
Jet fuel, lead paint, many hazardous
chemicals, benzene, etc.
Apparently, the military just used to
pour stuff out in an out of the way
corner for years and years and would
stack up old rusty drums of unknown
chemicals in an out of sight out of
mind fashion.
The military was supposed to clean it
all up years ago, but of course they
never lifted a finger

The wife and I used to fish for muskies and they were all catch and release. Everything else worth eating went into the cooler or livewell. Now days,I fish only my backyard pond after selling my boats. I gave up those times I used to pay for a bunch of gasoline to get me to a fishing spot and back in the truck and running around a lake all day in the hopes of maybe getting just one little nibble. We stocked our pond and let it grow some nice bass and bluegills. It's nice to catch and release and its nice when we can fill our dinner plates with some good eating too.

I saw a video of some people
fishing somewhere overseas,
and they put all their fish in a
cloth sack like folks used to
here decades ago. I'm sure they
weren't fishing for sport, but
wanted something to go with
their bowl of rice and chicken guts.

Lol,over in the Nam we were once set up near a small village for the day. My position was near a small pond. I tried my luck at fishing by using some thread from my survival kit and a crude hook I made baited with the filter from a cigarette. Not having much luck, I yelled fire in the hole and threw a hand grenade in the pond. Hundreds of little 3 inch fish came floating to the top. All the kids from that little mountain village dove in and started gathering all the fish for their evening meals. That made their day and mine too. My Platoon Sargent wasn't to happy though, that caused everybody to take cover. He was eating his C-Rations at the time.

When these area SE asians gather up
here locally, you can watch them for a
while, and they keep every fish they catch
regardless of the size and bag limit.
We saw one here at one of the local lakes
dive headlong into the water after his line
broke off and when he got back up out
with his rig, it was a tiny catfish that might
be legal in another 3 years. He kept it.
Probably to make that skunk smelling
rice sauce. 2 cambodians at the last
dealer I worked at would clear out the
lunch room when they brought that stuff

Sounds like our Amish over here. I was trolling for Walleye about 20 miles out in Lake Erie in my 17 foot boat when I looked over and seen 4 Amishmen in a little 12 foot boat ,fishing. How dumb is that? Brave or stupid, I don't know which.

Haven't had much trouble keeping fish here lately, just leave'em in the fish basket overnight at the fishing dock and they magically disappear before the next day...... Thinkin it might be a two legged raccoon or two.

That happened to me once when I was just a kid. My friends and I were fishing in our favorite spot in the woods and put all our fish on a stringer. When we pulled the stringer to go home, the only thing left were the heads. We stayed to see who the thief was and put another fish on the stinger but this time we waited and ended up catching a very large and heavy Snapping turtle. We carried that bad boy in a large net all the way home. It took all four of us to handle him. We did all the work and my uncle made soup out of him and ate him.

On one of our Scuba Diving trips, we were way out and the Island of Bonaire was barely in sight and we came across a very small fishing boat, like a 12 footer, with two islanders in it fishing with handlines. Now that is scary.

I take a cheap plastic cooler with a bag of ice.  When I start there's a bottle of sports drink and a couple handfuls of cheese sticks.  If it's a good trip, I go home with a pocket full of cheese stick wrappers and my limit of fish in the cooler.  There's no worry about the fish going bad on the way home...

If I'm in a boat, I definitely put any
keeper fish on ice in a cooler.
Bank fishing a creek or a river, I
don't carry a bunch of stuff because
I might end up walking 45 minutes
away from the truck. I've used a
hunting vest at times to put tackle
in the front shell pockets, and fish
in the game bag in the back.
Everything you lug away from the
vehicle you have to lug back,
most likely tuckered out after a
few hours fishing
I've had several stringers, but I get
tired of the blankety blanking snakes
and turtles trying to benefit from my
catch and prefer a wire basket.
I put zip ties on the bottom gate to
keep aquatic thieves out and smart
fish from wriggling through the crack.

My left hip joint is so rotten, walking more than a short way to the lake is out of the question for me.  I've had 3 pins in that hip for around 50 years and now it's so trashed, only an artificial replacement will fix it.  Maybe in a few years I'll get that done...

I can manage to drag over my fishing stuff and folding chair to the lakeside and I'm fishing for as long as I can sit there.  I can no longer launch a boat on my own and my grandsons aren't around any more to go fishing with me...

At least you're getting to fish
That's worth something.

You don't have to have a big
honking boat and run for 30
minutes to a honey hole to
catch a fish
