I saw the parachute and the wings on that emblem. I figured that was it. Ive never jumped out of a plane what was that like?
You just have to do it to know. I started skydiving when I was a senior in high school and the first time I was in a plain was when I jumped. I only had 14 jumps in before I went into the Army but skydived on post during advanced infantry training before going to jump school at Ft. Benning. From there it was off to Vietnam for my first tour. The star on the wings in my avatar is a combat jump star. We made the first combat jump against an enemy ground force since the Korean war on February 22 nd,1967.
Between tours in the Nam,I was trying out for the Army Parachute team, the Golden Knights, and made quite a few jumps with them but I was sent back to Nam with the 82nd Airborne Division before the Knights took me on full term. I was , however guaranteed a spot on the team if I returned from the Nam. Unfortunately, I ended up at Ft. Knox Hospital for two months ,from the Nam and upon my visit to the enlistment center there on Knox, they said they were not going to put me back on jump status and wanted me there at Knox to train recruits headed for the Nam. I decided to end my career with the Army. From there on, I just trained skydivers and had fun jumping whenever my wallet would allow me to.
My wife asked me the same question, what is it like?" so I took her to a jump club and in 5 short hours, she found out what it was like. She said, she felt like a bird.
