6mm 742 Remington
« on: May 01, 2021, 10:02:41 AM »
Came across one today in pretty good shape, he's asking $675, one box ammo, no scope. Thoughts?

If ya like semiautos like the 742 I'd say go for it. Those and same in .243 used to be real popular around here for deer hunting.

Now nothing with the Remington or Marlin name can be found in gun shops. As soon as the announcement Remington was folding came out folks bought every one on the shelves and none can be seen.

I sure miss Remington.

If the seller guarantees function,
and you want it, buy it.
I've had several 742's - 7400's with
no problems.
I know it's fashionable to slam them
on yoofloob.  I'd bet a stack of bills
if I had any that most of the people
that yap about it never owned or fired
or probably ever seen or held one
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

He's a gunsmith that has done work for me and I trust him. He says it's never jammed on him with the factory Remington ammo he shoots.

I'd say he's proud of it at $675. 6mm factory ammo is hard to find when ammo is readily available, and kinda pricey. Brass can even be hard to find and pricey as well. Great gun in a great caliber. It's only money, right? ;D

I read that Ruger is bringing back the Marlin 336 in 30-30 and 35 Remington.  I also heard whoever bought the Remington ammo brand is cranking them back up to full speed as they were only making 10% of what they could have in ammo.  This will help with the ammo situation.  I hope Ruger uses the model 1894 to match pistol and carbine calibers.

I would guess the Remington rifles will either reorganize to manufacture them or fold completely, since the rest of the company has been sold off to pay debt.  At least a gun company (Ruger) bought the Marlin tooling and brand.

Federal, well the conglomerate that owns Federal, Speer, Sierra, CCI and others bought the ammo part. I don't think they have any plans to use the same facilities Remington used but only to make it where their other ammo brands are made. So dunno about all that excess capacity. I think all of them are wide open now.

The Remington firearms part was also bought up but not by a gun maker. I can't remember right now who it was, maybe Palmetto but am not sure on that. I keep seeing ads on TV making me think maybe long guns at least are returning, I'm just not sure.

I don't think anyone has any plans to use the Huntsville, AL facility where Remington was making most all their firearms toward the end. That's a shame, lots of already trained folks and a huge facility and equipment.

I think CDNN must have bought most all rifle and maybe shotgun parts on hand so whoever wants to make rifles will have to start from scratch.

Ruger says they will make the Marlin 1894, 336 and 1895 and maybe the semiauto 22LR which I think is a Model 99. I've not seen any mention yet of others. About the only Marlin I'd be interested in these days is the bolt action tube magazine .22 magnum and maybe an 1894 or two depending on price. The tube fed .22 mag tho I'd sure buy if I could find one.

Of course I've been saying that about a Weatherby Mark XXII with tube magazine for years and now I've found one and am passing on it at $785 plus shipping and price for local FFL to accept it for me. I just don't want it quite that bad.

Wish Ruger would bring back the Marlin 39.  I always wanted one, but never bought one.

Wish Ruger would bring back the Marlin 39.  I always wanted one, but never bought one.

A friend had a nice 39 that one of
his kids confiscated, and couldn't
find another.
I was with him when he went to look
at one place for another, and he went
out the door with a Henry.
The action feels like a smoothed
and teflon coated 39, but smoother
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Pack and Postal center has a couple of Model 39s listed in their most recent ad in Gun Digest Magazine. You can look them up by googling their name. I've dealt with them and then are a good outfit to do business with.

They have a Weatherby Mark XXII in the newest ad that sorely tempts me but I've decided not to buy it.
