No way!!!
« on: May 03, 2021, 08:34:40 AM »
Semi Autonomous vehicles are extremely dangerous. Not only to the occupants but the other drivers on the road as well. We are still decades away from any machine, robots, androids ,or anything else that is fully autonomous.

People in 2021 want devices that
take the least effort away from whatever
they do. Might take a bit longer, but
we'll have the driverless cars and trucks
like the "Johnny Cab " in the Total Recall
movie,  and robotic servants and lovers
and everything else.
I know dozens that won't even walk 3
minutes to their mailbox and back.
Golf cart or UTV
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

This is the age of "gadget fascination"!  Some folks seem to be mesmerized with technology and gadgets !

Just look at all the techy looking stuff packed into cars & trucks..as well as kitchens and throughout the house.

Much like big, elaborate homes with exorbitant maintenance, I think many people buy that stuff, just to impress others.

If I were to buy a new car or truck today, I would be forced to buy many things I don't  even want.

Most people forget to consider the
high cost of repairs for all that gadgetry.

That's why I'm still driving cars made in 2005. I have a 2005 Jeep Wrangler with crank windows, no ABS and no gadgets with 282K miles on it. I also have a 2005 Grand Marquis with no gadgets. I can't get interested in newer vehicles with gadgets I don't want or need and don't want to pay the silly prices they want. I wish a car manufacturer would come out with an affordable vehicle with the bare minimum of options, that has to be a huge untapped market because I'm not the only one who feels that way.

One of the gadgets that gives me the biggest laughs is the newer RFID keys. You pay extra for that "security" rather than having an old fashioned key on the steering column to start your car. Because these RFID keys are "intelligent" it's now easier to steal cars than it was in the old days when car thieves had to smash the steering columns. All thieves have to do now is drive into your neighborhood with a a special RFID reader and read your electronic "key" from a distance. They create an electronic match and voila, they steal your car. Most of the stolen cars go right to a shipping container where they get shipped overseas. It's a huge black market.

Gas pumps also. Hackers love that. They put a tiny thin film in there, which reads your card.  Been there.

Some of the gas stations here are
putting security stickers across the
little doors that access the controls
of the pumps, but I'm sure the thieves
will figure out a way to defeat that
like they do everything else.
Having a keyed lock sure didn't
stop em. They just made a key and
continued stealing

My company car is a Subaru Forester,  while not autonomous it has "vision". It keeps you in your lane and at the same speed as the car in front of you.  It will even come to a complete stop if the car in front of you stops. I absolutely love it.

Yep!  Lose that RFID key, and how much does a replacement cost?  Therein lies the racket!/color]

Yes, it's one of those wonderful things where you are forced to go to the dealer to get a replacement.

I started driving a on the farm as soon as I was big enough to reach the pedals. All standard shift back then. In the 73 years that have passed I have never lost my vehicle keys including the RFID one I have now. My Acadia has the same features as billy's and I love them too. It will even dim and brighten your headlights for you if you wish. I consider cruise control to be the best feature to have been added to vehicles.

had to get one for my last silverado. Went to the dealer and he said 80 bucks. Wasnt happy but kept my mouth shut. Right up to the point he told me it cost 120 bucks to program it. Found out its a 5 minute job for them. Raised enough hell in the service dept that to shut me up they offered to program it for free. Told them in a not so calm voice that i bought 6 new and 2 used vehicles from them in the last 14 years and i think i gave them enough money and if they wouldnt do it id drive it to the ford dealer and trade it in and never step foot in that place again.

I have several "chip" keys for my truck.
Not that I've ever lost a key, because I
never have.  I feel it's just prudent to
have an immediately available replacement.
Way better than putting a halt to your
activities so you can spend a day having
a replacement made.
