.45-70 accuracy with 1895
« on: March 05, 2004, 11:51:44 AM »
I am interested in a deer/hog woods rifle in .45-70 and it seems from looking around that the Marlin 1895 is the best mix of features/capabilities on the market. I've never owned a lever rifle, but I expect that it is about time I corrected that oversight :-)

I would be very interested in knowing what sort of accuracy I can expect from an out-of-the-box specimen using factory ammunition.

Additionally, since I reload, I'd expect that I could better factory load accuracy, so I'd appreciate hearing what others have been able to achieve with their reloads.  I will likely shoot both 300 gr and 405 gr jacketed bullets and possibly cast bullets in the 325-385 range.

I don't expect this to be a tack-driver, but I'd be pleased to have a rifle that would shoot 2" 5-shot groups @ 100 yds and tickled pink with 1.5".

I have read here that the SS model has microgroove rifling and that I might not be able to use cast bullets if I should buy one of these. Experience-based comments on this sub-topic are appreciated.
