NYC church attack: Jesus statue toppled, American flag burned
NYPD says Brooklyn incident could be possible hate crime
By Craig McCarthy, Larry Celona | New York Post

How does law enforcement confront crime surge amid push to 'defund police'?
A statue of Jesus was smashed and an American flag burned outside a Catholic church in Brooklyn — in what cops are calling a possible hate crime.

The incident occurred around 10 p.m. Thursday when an unknown person hopped the fence at St. Athanasius Church on Bay Parkway at 61st Street in Bensonhurst, police said.

The vandal pushed over a statue of Jesus’s crucifixion, breaking it into pieces, and torched an American flag hanging outside the rectory, according to cops.

The church’s pastor, Msgr. David Cassato, noticed the act of vandalism around 8 a.m. Friday and reported it to the NYPD, the Diocese of Brooklyn said in a statement.

The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is looking into the incident.

"This was truly an act of hatred, and today is the saddest day of my twenty years here at this parish," Cassato said in the diocese release.

The crucifix was installed in 2010 to honor the memory of Cassato’s mother, the statement said.

"I went over and spoke to the students in the school about what happened, telling them that hate never wins," Cassato said. "We are, and must be, a community that continues to share the message of Easter, that which is of love, hope, and forgiveness."

Christ got off that Cross some 2,000 years ago,  and the Catholic organization keeps creating "graven images" and putting Him right back up there.
I don't condone the destruction of private property, but that one is, or was, an abomination, so good riddance. JMO

So not ok to conceal carry in a posted business, but ok to break in and destroy their personal property?

I have the same issues with the Catholic church but I think they have every right to believe what they want.  I hope those responsible are caught and, I'd say burnt at the stake but we don't do that anymore...

Until the terrorist fear the costs of their actions, they will continue to do as they please.  In my small town there was a BLM protest.  It ended peacefully because red necks know how to shoot and won't take the sh*t the people in the cities put up with...

wheres that like button. Your bare cross in your church represents the exact same thing ours does. Jesus dieing on the cross FOR US. Anyone who would destroy it is a pig. No one should find one bit of justification for something like this. Your church will be next. I too find it hypocritical that theres respect for walmart or mc donalds but not a christian church.

Christmas can't come soon enough. Let's posse up and tear down all those nativity scenes in front of Protestant and Baptist churches. But that's only on our way to the inside, where we smash pictures of Jesus, Mary and the Baby, stained glass windows  and the communion tables with their image of the cross.

Hide out in the bushes overnight and sturdy our minds and warm our bodies with hard liquor for the morning's work. Hey, it sez
"be not drunk with wine".

And the look on the faces of boyfriends and husbands, as we wait in the bushes to rip crosses off the wives and girlfriends.

The Lord's work. Fun stuff!

while were at it lets just go all the way and burn down the churches. Jesus never needed one. Ive seem some pretty opulent protestant chruches. I think if Jesus was here today he tell you to spend that money helping his people. Throwing stones in a glass church. I guess the baptist church thats here in town on a prime piece of lake superior shoreline with there nice new church with individual padded chairs is ok though. Guess at least they waited to the pedophile pastor was run out of town. Our church is a 100 years old this year and got its first renovation.(still ho padded pews though) but they did fix the cracks in the walls and the crumbling steps out front.  Only view from it is the elementary school.

LOL, I guess you're another one of those that just reads the part of the post or in this case, the part of the  sentence that suits your need to be indignant. I'm used to that, and as I said JMO, is still MO. ;)

Actually Jesus went to the synagogue, the Jews church in that day. He also went to people outside the church. Jesus accepted any who repented and believed on him as lord. His mission was to pay the price for mans sin with his shed blood on the cross.

In today’s world we have all kinds of churches that preach all kinds of doctrine. We can agree or disagree but that does not give anyone the right to destroy others personal property.

You can't negate your support of it by saying you don't condone it.  It's like saying "not trying to be mean, but your ugly".

well said pastor. We have enough problems today with the socialists trying to take away our Christain rights. On a site like this condemning another Christian over the way his church decorates the walls what prayers its says or wheither they dip or dunk is so trivial it shouldnt even be mentioned. What it reminds me of is the other site where guys come there to a pro gun site and brag about voting for biden and think there welcomed. We absolutely today have to throw this silly bs and infighting between Christians away and come together as one voice for Jesus. Its the only way we survive. PERIOD. Its not different then gun owners that preach they believe in the second amendment but are willing to throw ar15s or high capacity mags under the bus because they dont have one. There coming for ALL of our guns and they wasnt ALL Christianity taken out of day to day life. They dont care if your catholic, baptist or a JW. This was an attack on Christianity. Not the catholic church. My guess is those that did it wouldnt know a catholic from a protestant or a protestant from a muslim. .
