A guy asked me why so many of these guns in this caliber were in pawn shops and for sale in general.

Is there something wrong with them?

Nothing wrong with Contenders in .35 Rem as far as I know. My Super 14 in this caliber is one of my most accurate barrels, and I've not had the misfire problems some report. They do kick some; maybe some folks don't like that.

The 35 Rem is a great cartridge that is perfectly suited for the Contender. Unfortunately, it's a somewhat obscure cartridge that is almost impossible to find in factory loadings unless you really keep you eye's peeled. What makes the fate of this cartridge even worse is that it really doesn't offer anything (slightly flatter trajectory?) that isn't provided by the 44 Mag round.

From what I gather, the big thing with .35 Rem. is somewhere between the quality of the chamber and the quality of the brass since it has such a small shoulder, headspacing is critical to ensure good compression of the priming material against the anvil. So as long as care is taken to ensure good headspacing there should be no problem.

I guess it depends on what part of the country you live in. In Michigan, Wisconsin and other midwest states, it is common. Available at most Walmarts and the like. While no where near a common as .30-30, there is still a big following among woodland deer hunters. I would guess that in Colorado where wide open spaces and mountains are the norm, a .35 would find little following there.
