Timeline, 13th century...Alexander II is king of Scotland (1249-1286). Things have become strained between Alexander and King Haakon of Norway.
King Haakon lands on the Scottish coast, nearby where today's Largs is located. At night, they start to move out toward where some recon said a large Scottish bivouac is located.
Haakon's aim was for complete surprise. He had nearly accomplished his goal, when one of his troops stepped full onto a big, ugly thistle. His outcry alerted the Scots, who went on to defeat Haakon in a rout.
Naturally, in the fullness of time, the Scots selected the Thistle as their national flower. You find the thistle blossom decorating many things Scottish.
The same plant is common here in the northeast..my lawn has plenty of them. My Dad used to call them "Bull Thistles", since they are so much more profuse in their foliage, than a plain pasture thistle.
