Loading brass shot shells
« on: May 22, 2021, 10:29:26 AM »
When loading brass shells what is the best glue for the over shot card? Do I need to crimp any?  Thanks.

I use this on mine.  I have a 1882 Remington side by side that looks great on the outside but the bore is pitted.  It will shoot my light 2 1/2's , but it's just cool to shoot the brass black powder.  I use 777 to make clean up easy.

If you have to shoot more than once you should not have shot the first time.

Thanks. I forgot about that stuff.  I have a old Belgian side by side from 1890?  Will be loading her black.   For now what I am working on are  shot loads in 45/70.  Guys say to use 410 data.  I found black 410 data  at Goexpowder.com    https://goexpowder.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/breechloading-sg-shells.pdf   The charge and payload are much lighter than for a bullet.    Used .455 fiber wads and a 7/16 punch to cut over shot cards from 20ga cards.   Then used the Lee factory crimp die and school glue. They look good. Made 5 for a test run.  More latter.--Side by side.

Basically the rule I follow, is equal power and shot when it comes to black powder.  I run about 3 drams.  Using 777 you get about a 15% power bump over traditional bp. That's for the 12.  I also have a pedisoli,  percussion 12 and a saxton 16 percussion. I have about 100 mag tech shells.  I run 7's for grouse and clays,  and 5's for pheasants. Last year I took it to the trap range before pheasant season and shot better than I do with my dedicated trap gun.  I love the stock and comb drop on the old guns. Here's a shot of the saxton I haven't had time to work up loads for her yet.

I just now saw this old thread. I wish that i had seen it months ago.
The best sealant/glue that I have used for brass hulls is , hands down, Duco cement.
I have used others - crazy glue, Elmers, water glass……Duco works better.
Here is a picture of one rig for a pheasant hunt: An old Parker DH and 12 gauge brass from Rocky Mt. Cartridge Co., 80 grains of FFg black, 1 1/8oz. of #6 shot.
