Overrated rock bands?
« on: May 28, 2021, 09:39:15 AM »
Since we already talked about underrated rock bands how about overrated rock bands?

My vote is for the Rolling Stones for most overrated. While I do like some of their songs I don't think their talent level matches the amount of attention they've received over the years.
My runner up vote would be Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Again, I like a few of their songs but they're just not that good.

Yeah the stones have lived off
their 60's fame
I always thought the Who were better
as far as brit groups of the same era

JMHO- there are a lot of over rated
groups and too many to list. Many
had better promotion than others
that were more talented but didn't
have the press and promoting
like the more famous groups
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

now i sure wouldnt say zeppelin was over rated. They had jimmy page who arguably is one of the best guitar player ever and robert plant has a set of lungs. Never did care for Jimi hendrix much he could sure play a guitar but his lyrics and voice sucked. Stones had some real great stuff and some crap. Overated? About anything from the disco days. About any of the big hair bands of the 80s that sold records because girls swooned over them. lets add michel jackson who was king of bubble gun. Cindy Lauper Joan Jet. Ill even drag the 60s and 70s into it. Lets take bob dylan. He had a terrible voice. Only reason he was popular was his anti establishment lyrics. His son Jacob had a much better voice. Aerosmith, good i guess if you like to hear an ugly sob screaming lyrics. Cheap trick is another i thought was just bubble gum noise.

I agree with the 80's hair bands, every single one of them was overrated.

I'd have to disagree about Led Zeppelin too. I'm a bass player and John Paul Jones is definitely a top caliber bass player and all around great musician. He can play many different instruments. He started his career as a session musician and back in the 60's only top musicians played sessions. Jimmy Page was also a session musician in the 60's, that's how he met John Paul Jones. Both of them played on tons of records as session musicians, there are many popular songs from the 60's with both of them on the record and you don't even realize it's them.

John Bonham is a good drummer, I think he's slightly overrated as a drummer but still very good. Robert Plant is one of the better rock singers of all time, not the best but very good.

The Beatles takes first place for me. Next would be Hendrix. Springsteen is next in line and can only holler lyrics. Terrible singer IMO. Also never found any love for Zeppelin or Steppinwolf either.

Springsteen is a good choice, extremely overrated.

I listen to S/XM a lot. Don't like the selection playing, just skip it. I spend a lot of time listening to the "50's, 60's, and 70's channels while going about my retired piddling around. When what I consider a crappy song comes on one channel I just switch channels. This doesn't always work as they sometimes have what I call crappy music day on all of them. They have just added several rock channels that have '60's to '90's rock so I should be able to skip around and avoid the stuff I don't like. I have the classic rock channel playing in the background right now.

I don't know how anyone could put Zeppelin as over rated, they are probably in top three bands ever and I don't know what you would above them.

I think Beatles are overrated, but they changed everything so hard to say that as well.  If they came a bit later, they weren't much more than the Monkeys...

I know a lot of people liked them, but I never much cared for Heart.

It all comes down to personal preference. That is how this anyone puts them as over rated. I'll admit that Zep and the Beatles has a couple of songs each that I kind of liked but Heart had more. My old ipod has about 900 songs on it and it contains none by these three groups.

I agree with the Stones being over rated. I bought a lot of rock albums during the 70's, and I can't say I ever bought a Stones album.  I also thought that maybe Kiss, and Motley Crue were over rated. Never bought any of their stuff either. Also agree on Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band. too many of his songs sounded the same to me.

My son was a big fan of Kiss for some reason. Probably because he was a teenager. Even the members of Kiss said they weren’t great musicians but that they put on a darn good show for their fans.

I think that was it. What attracted people to Kiss was not their music, but their outfits and stage presence.

another one that kind of makes the list but for different reasons. REO speedwagon. They had few good songs then went bubble gun. That and if you look at that gay looking sob it would ruin you for them forever.

have to agree. If i had to pick the top two #1 would be pink floyd and zep #2. unless we throw in woodstock stuff then id put crosby stills nash and young in the mix too.

I think Ace Frehley from Kiss was a good guitarist in the early days but the rest of that band was pretty average. They were definitely more about stage antics and show than musicianship.

My top 3 for most of my life in no particular order has been Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Rush. Later in life I discovered an obscure English band called The Pretty Things who were big in England but never made it here. They are high on my list as well. They were a musician's band and were loved by many big name musicians especially Zeppelin and Bowie but they never made it in America.

I liked Pink Floyd a good bit. Dark Side Of The Moon was maybe the second album I ever purchased, after Harvest by Niel Young  Which I liked a lot of Niel Young too.  I really liked David Gilmore's vocals, and guitar playing, along with Waters song writing. On one of Gilmore's solo albums he did. I always liked the song "There's No Way Out Of Here"  Pink Floyd was a very talented group.   Have to mention Zeppelin Was a very talented group also. Wish I had a Dollar for every time I have listened to "Stairway To Heaven", Kashmir, and Whole Lotta Love"

Stairway to Heaven gives me goosebumps every time I hear it for personal reasons.  I was a high school senior and the night after one of my best friends died in a car crash, I was hanging out, still in shock with a few mutual friends having a few beers and talking about him.  Stairway to Heaven came on over the radio and it was dedicated to my friend.  It was a very touching 8 minutes.

For you Zeppelin fans, here's a bit of history that most people don't know exists so I figured I'd share. Right when Jimmy Page put together his band called "The New Yardbirds" with John Paul Jones they were both still working as studio musicians. John Paul Jones had booked a studio date with a singer named P.J. Proby who Jones and Page had worked with before. Since John Paul Jones needed to hire musicians for this recording date with P.J. Proby he decided he might as well hire his new band mates Robert Plant and John Bonham so the four members of The New Yardbirds AKA Led Zeppelin were the backing band for P.J. Proby's album. Proby sang lead vocals so Robert Plant played harmonica and sang backing vocals. It basically sounds like Zeppelin's first album with a different singer.

I appreciate your sentimental reasoning, but too much airtime repetition spoiled this one and Free Bird, for me.  Don't need to hear these two ever again.  Sorry :-X

The reason songs like Stairway To Heaven and Freebird got so much air time was because people loved them, were buying them, and wanted to hear them.

2 songs I am not familiar with at all.  By the time they came along most current rock music was no longer fit to listen to.  Probably less than 100 really good songs after 1975 through 2000.

Personally, I wore out several L Zep albums
and tapes in my high school daze and never
needed to buy anything else or play any of it
again. I can hear it all in my head and I
imagine with a few minutes of thought I
could sing it all aloud verbatim
I still do like it, but I have a lifetime of
overload in my head
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .
