most accurate load??

i got a buff classic 45-70 whats the most accurate load for it??
i figure if i get enough responses on this i can see a pattern of replies saying the same load.

For cast bullets,  27 grains of 5744 under a 405 grain bullet sized at least .459 is going to be hard to beat. I'm finding that 50/50 lead/wheelweight gives better accuracy than straight WW. 30 grains of 4198 does about as well. Trying for velocities over 1400 fps with cast plain based bullets seems to be a waste of time.

Someone else will have to tell you about jacketed bullets because I don't use them in my .45-70s.

And blackpowder is a world unto itself.

I have had great luck with 28.0 grains of 2400 behind a Hornady 350 grain half jacketed bullet (.358)....<><.... :grin:

Although I've done quite a bit of work on this, I'm anxiously waiting for "Aladdin" to jump in here with some real good STUFF!  He has probably done more with this gun than anyone I personally know of, and his lessons are easy to follow.  I will say the rifle will shoot if you're a bit patient with it, and can get along okay with the sights. I needed new sights, but it seems everyone doesn't.

dj....FWIW, I agree with you 100%.  Funny how that mixture of WW and pure lead solves a lot of problems.
