NEF Misfiring
« on: March 06, 2004, 09:38:20 AM »
Hi Guys, :D
I'm usually on the T/C Handgun channel, but I friend complained to me today that his new NEF .17 rim fire is misfiring   about one in every ten shots.  Dents the rim but not enough to set off the charge.  I told him I bet I knew where I could get him some information.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

:D Hello Mayor, I am not well versed in this as my H&R's all fire every time. I have however seen posts regarding this problem and will try to help. First make sure the trigger is pulled all the way to the rear and held there, because of a safety feature just barely touching and lightly tripping the trigger can cause the safety bar to slightly retract causing a weak firing pin strike (thank you lawyers). Second, if needed, remove the buttstock (phillips srewdriver, rachet with 2 long extensions and a 9/16's socket) spray some cleaner/degreaser (a lot) in every opening you can find around the trigger and hammer to try to get out the filings, grease and crud left there from manufacture. let dry, lightly lube and reassemble. Third, if problem persists return to factory for repair (free but takes a couple of weeks and shipping costs) or lightly stone upper bearing surface of the hammer to cause a bit more hammer strike onto the safety bar which strikes the firing pin, about a couple of thousands is all that is needed. I suggest if you need the third step to visit the fine site on trigger adjustment authored by "perklo".  Check the FAQ section or use the search feature to research it.  Good Luck, It is an easy fix and most of these fine rifles are capable of less than a true 1.0 MOA, many .17 HMR's are shooting .5 MOA on a windless day, I have one and it shoots better than I do....<><....    (P.S. What part of Maine are you from? My camp is in Bradford and I hunt winter coyotes along the Golden Road mostly south of the Abol Bridge.)

Thanks of the comeback MSP Ret.  I'll pass the information along to my friend.  I have a worksheet on honing the trigger of the NEF rifle.  I confess that I have four Contender frames, nine barrrels, an Encore rifle with the muzzle loader barrel and a .243 barrel.  Along the way I bought a heavy barrel NEF .223, put a cheap scope on it and it shoots the britches off every other firearm I own! With a trigger job and a better scope it would be  really awesome.

I winter around the Brunswick area and from ice out to freeze up in the fall live in an isolated camp in the Brownville area.  Go in by boat.  No power except solar, no septic, no noise!  Love it.

Moose hunted off the Golden Road six years ago.  Help a friend get one in the Allagash fall before last.  I great place to be.

Thanks for the help.

Sounds like "The way life should be".  I travel through Brownville when I go from my camp in Bradford to Millinocket to visit friends. Rather take the senic route than the highway anytime. My wife caught her first native trout on a flyrod  out of her kayak my friend (a warden) and I carried in about 1/4 mile though the woods to Mountaintop Pond in KI. Got a great picture of her in her kayak holding her flyrod with a young bull moose standing above and behind her about 20-30 feet on the edge of the pond. There both smiling!! A picture of a lifetime. Used to hunt out af a friends camp in Sebois, great place and my son got his first deer out of the Sebois camp Thanksgiving day during a real downeast blizzard when he was 14, one shot too!! This sure brings back great memories, Thanks...and have fun!!....<><....

Try a different batch of ammo before you start tinkering. Rimfire ammo without  priming or with priming in only part of the rim is disgusting common.
