Marlins no longer drilled and tapped for receiver sights?
« on: March 06, 2004, 11:40:17 AM »
I have recently acquired an 1895 and an 1894P Marlin, and neither is drilled and tapped for a receiver sight.

It's been a while since I've owned a Marlin, but as I recall the ones I had before were drilled and tapped. When did this Marlin make this change?

Sound's like the Disney Company.Revolt time from the old day's.

Been a couple years now I think since they stopped. You can get reciever sights that fit the rear 2 scope holes. I think williams makes one.

Bob C - They did stop drilling and tapping them around 2001 I believe. LeverDude is right, Williams now makes the FP that installs using the rear two holes just like the WGRS does. Got to agree with Jayco - strange goings on over at Marlin..  :?  CEJ...

Same thing happened to me.  My .35 didn't have the old mounting holes on the side.  Wanted to mount my Lyman peep on it, but put a Williams 5D utilizing the top two rear scope screw holes.  Works like a champ, although a prefer the Lyman.  The Williams works just as well though. I didn't want a rookie gunsmith to screw up mounting the Lyman.
I put the Williams on it, and after some range use....  I recommend the Williams!
I guess Marlin doesnt think many people use peeps anymore.   Williams made a smart move to corner the market for peeps that is STILL around.
Four days ago I went to the range and got consistant less than and inch group at 50 yards.  At 100 yards I obtained average three-four shot groups at 1 1/2"  This was with the rear Williams peep bottomed out.  At 50 yards the group was dead center.  At 100 yards it was three inches high.  No biggie.  I want to put Williams fire sight on the front.  Will knock out the existing front sight and "mike" the hight and width, and will go with the next highest fire sight.
Last year I had a Luepold 3-9 X 40 on it for hunting season.  Felt weird to me with a scope.  Decided to go back the the old fashioned but effective aperture sight!  Hope this helps. :D

PS:  My initial sighting in was using the target aperture.  Will use the larger hunting one for it's intended purpose!

Brownelss also has a "ghist ring type rear sight and fronmt sight combo for @ $90.  A little steep but it's another option.

I have a Marlin 336CB I bought last Summer and a 1894CL I picked up last Friday, both new, both have 4 holes drilled in the top of the recievers and filled with plug screws. Those are not for scope mounts???? Or have these just been sitting in some warehouse for 3-4 years? Don't seem likely!  Seems to me both those models would have been the first to go without scope mounting holes.

Marlin receivers

Hi Folks,
I have a couple of Marlin CB's. I noticed that when Marlin went to  uncheckered stocks, (2003?)  the receivers were no longer tapped. This is too bad since most of the shooters I know install Lyman or Williams receiver sights for cowboy silhouette type shooting. I had to go to my friendly gunsmith and have my 357CB drilled for the sight installation.

I had called Marlin about this last year. The story I got was that after 100 years the machine that drilled the holes on the side of the receiver finally gave out and it was cost prohibitive to replace it. As mentioned several types of receiver sights that fit the rear 2 holes on the top of the receiver. I have a Williams and it is has good as the side mounted ones. To be honest I kind of like it better than the side mounted ones. It is not as bulky.
