New 45-70 on the way.

I went over to Wally world this morning and had them call thier supplier and make sure they have a NEF 45-70 Handi in stock. They did so I ordered it. They said it takes eight to ten days on in stock Items si its on the way. I discussed this with many of you on the old site but that was sometime back. My plan is to have a BC barrel added later if thats an option. I ordered the wood stock as they seem a little heavier. I would like to know what some of you use for a light load for smaller game and close up Varmits and also the best longer range deer and bigger game load. I also plan to do some black powder work with it as well. Cabelas has had my new 44 Mag now for several weeks but the weather has been so bad I have not made the trip from Jamestown ND down to Mitchell SD. Thats Bad. Thanks guys. Walmart here gets 50 percent down to order them in. I know the gun manager there well. :wink:

James, I have had great luck with 350 grain Hornady softpoints behind 28.0 grains of 2400, easy shooting and very accurate. Try these sites, http://stevespages.com/458_1_350.html and www.reloadammo.com, go to either 45-70 or .458 bullets at those sites for many different loads. Congratulations on the 45-70, it is the last gun I would ever sell, its fun to shoot, will take anything on this continent, has been around forever, has many others who are trying to be like it or better than it but it is the one, the only, the original!!! Check on this site for some info on sabots with pistol bullets or round lead balls, great backyard squirrel loads!!! This caliber can do it all, and do not be worried about the recoil, it is not even close to a 12 gauge!!....<><.... :lol:

I don't know which reloading manuals you have,but you should pick up the Hodgdon's annual manual...about $8.00 on the magazine racks..the new one came out a few weeks ago..... I like the 300 grain Noslers using H4198,at the starting loads for the Marlin...this load gave excellent results on my 10 pointer the past deer season..complete penatration at 152 yards and he only took a few steps and piled up, can't help you with the lite loadings,but I'm sure aothers here can and will.

  I checked on Wally Worlds price on that gun, $184.00 in wood stock. I am tempted to buy one, even though I already have the Buffalo Classic in 45/70. The 45/70 has a certain fascination to it. I don't know if it's a tradition thing, or the American way of bigger is better, but I would never be without one. When deer season comes around, I always have an arguement with myself as to which gun to take. My .44 mag. won last year, but the 45/70 will get ther nod this year.

Thanks for the reply's. I have been hooked on the 45-70 for many years as well. I have had two of the Marlins, one other NEF, A Ruger number three. and a contender. I shot a 500+ lb Black Bear in Sask. with the first Marlin. I was useing the 350 grain Hornady RN. @ 1850 FPS with IMR 3031. It went through the top of the skull, all the way down the center of the neck, through the front of the chest and we found the bullet mushroomed perfectly undes the hide between the front legs. Needles to say it never so much as twitched. Dead before it hit the ground. He top of the skull was totaly shattered. Yet with lighter cast bullets its a fun plinker and close up varmit gun. Always keep in mind that promises like records are made to be broken :grin:  Unless its to your wife :wink:
   That Ruger number three kicked like three mules. :eek:

  My BC has a lot of mule in it, but I learned how to cheat the recoil Gods. I take the stock off my NEF, you know, the one with the nice cushy recoil pad, and I use that. Of course it has the weight in the stock as well. I had a Marlin Guide Gun, but sold it after buying the BC. These guns are more fun to play with than any I've ever owned. The funny thing is that my favorites are on either end of the spectrum, the 45/70, and the .223. I think I'd need a shrink to explain that one to me. :?

Big Blue, I know what you mean, I really like my 7x57, it's a sweetheart, my .223 is a tackdriver, my 12 gauges, both rifled and smoothbore are fun to shoot, my newest project gun, a .22 Mag with Weaver Quik Point is really working out well so far, but my Favorites are my 45-70 and my .17 HMR!!! They say opposites attract but  it does seem funny....<><.... :)

Well it must be an NEF thing. I love my 223 also. I bought this one used but like new. It has the synthetic stock which I like on the 223. I want to get a BC barrel for the new 45-70. I like the stock and pad on the handi rifle. I think I can get the long barrel for the new one. Has anyone done that? I have the 26 inch 280 and a new 44 Mag that I haven't picked up at Cabelas. I have the 12 GA with the green Laminated stock and the Madalion on the stock. I had a 30-30 and 30-06 plus the 243 Ultra. I want to get another 30-30 barrel and shoot the original black powder loads. Sombody said they heard that the 357 barrel was going to be dropped. Anyone know anything about that? Might still add a 25-06 barrel as well.

James B. I was just on the H&R/ NEF web sight no 357' barrels or
rifles list at all, I guess they are gone, Why? I don't Know. I think it was a very good caliber to use and Play with. I can understand why you don't
want to go rambling around this time of year, to pick up guns, where you are. Was you on the old H&R sight by different name? Stay warm up
there in the north land! :-D  :-D

Those .357's sounded like a fun gun but I never really desired one, UNTIL, I tought of having a .357 barrel rechambered to .35 Remington!!! Now the barrels are gone, well I'll still keep looking for one to sutface at a reasonable price for my experiment....<><.... :-)

Marv, MSP, it's worth a call to NEF to see if they still have a few .357 barrels. I know that they are still fitting them to guns already in as one of our buds has a rifle being fitted.

When they shut down the old site, they had 200 .357 barrels on hand and were fitting about a dozen a month.

DJ    I was first to use the maxie remear, I have had my 357
nearly a year. Happy with it just wish could get to shoot more.
Just got 44 Mag barrel. shot 3 times. Marv
