The New York Times had 60 inches of Subway tuna sandwiches from three different restaurants in Los Angeles lab tested after the chain was accused in a lawsuit reported earlier this year, alleging the fish is made from "a mixture of various concoctions," first reported by the Washington Post.

The tuna was frozen and sent out to the lab, which determined "no amplifiable tuna DNA was present in the sample and so we obtained no amplification products from the DNA. Therefore, we cannot identify the species," according to the Times.

The lab conducted a PCR test to see if Subway’s tuna featured one of five varying tuna species, the New York Times reported, explaining there are 15 species of fish that can be labeled tuna, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Seafood List.

The lab determined two potential reasons why no tuna was detected in the sample, saying, "One it’s so heavily processed that whatever we could pull out, we couldn’t make an identification … Or we got some and there’s just nothing there that’s tuna," the newspaper noted.

Experts told the Times that when tuna is cooked, its protein breaks down, making it hard to identify, so the lab results may not be accurate, according to the Times.

Subway did not immediately return a FOX Business request for comment.

The food fraud investigation comes on the heels of a complaint filed with the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of California suing the sandwich chain for fraud, with the plaintiffs alleging they were lied to and "tricked into buying food items that wholly lacked the ingredients they reasonably thought they were purchasing."

Subway responded to the lawsuit in January, saying there is "no truth to the allegations in the complaint" and affirming the chain "delivers 100% cooked tuna to its restaurants," Fox News previously reported.

ever wonder how much of that burger at the fast food place that tastes like cardboard is actually beef. I like the subway sea food salad sub but am not so gullible to think its actually crab. I guess to me if its tastes decent who cares. i doubt whatever it is it hasnt killed anyone. Id bet some who stick there nose in the air eat hotdogs and bologna the real mystery meats.

The only teeniest tiniest thing I
can think of is that at least people
were a bit more conscientious about

That's as good a reason as any.  The truth is you're not missing anything.  Their food isn't worth the cost.  Most grocery stores have a deli counter and all are better than crapway.

You are right, I won't miss anything. The only sub I would buy there was the spicy Italian.  I guy I always worked with would get the Buffalo Chicken sub, and he would tell me it was good. So I gave in and tried it, and thought it sucked. Anyway no more subway for me. What is it with these businesses? Don't they realize that by hiring a dike to do a commercial, that kneels for the Anthem, will piss of a bunch of their customers off?  I know that wasn't very well publicized, but I have been telling everyone I know.  When companies do stupid things like that. I think they do try to keep it quiet.

The manager or CEO or whoever is probably
a purple haired kneeling dyke and likely as
not has the modern twisted view of the world
like most everyone else is taking up. Do whatever
you want to do that gets you off and makes you
feel good and screw everybody else that doesn't
like it.

I've eaten at Subpar in the past, and the last
couple of times I  could have sworn that
they had dug my sandwich out of a dumpster
somewhere.

look at the recent mcdonalds and burger king comericals and youd think this whole country is black. Heck you cant watch tv for more then 2 hours without seeing a mixed marriage or a couple fruit cakes! If you believed what you saw in adveritizements youd think that 75 percent of the country is black and half the country is gay and half the marriages are mixed race. Youd have to shut off your tv and lock yourself in your house to avoid it. but ill boycott subway with you. I think i might have ate maybe a half a dozen of there subs in my life and sure dont care to have another.
