sure made a rookie mistake yesterday
« on: June 27, 2021, 01:29:06 AM »
had a new 06 and my 300hamr at the range. Was all done with load development for the year. Have those two a new 8x57 a 7mag and a 6.5-300 i already finished. All i had left to do was the chrono the o6 and 300. Finished up and had about 10 rounds of 06 left so i was shooting at a steel plate at a 100 yards off hand. Everything went fine till shot 7. I got a puff of gas in the face and knew something was wrong. Tried to open the bolt and it was no go. Took it home and used a dead blow plastic hammer and got the bolt open the the case out and low and behold it was an 857 i had mixed in with the 06. Then this wasnt your daddys 8x57 load. it was a 150 hornady that goes close to 3100 fps. Dammed lucky thats all that happened. Just goes to show you no matter how experienced you are you can make a rookie mistake if you let your guard down.

I’ve made a couple myself. It’ll definitely get your attention.

Yep for sure. Its amazing how easy stuff like that happens, especially as we age. I think things like that happen easier. I know when I'm at the reloading bench anymore. It just seems to take a lot more concentration to reload rounds than it used to, or maybe in the past it was just easier to concentrate. .

I have changed oil in cars and trucks ever since I was 15 or 16. Just last year I accidentally pulled the drain plug on the pan for the CVT transmission instead of the oil pan. I was so pissed at myself for such a stupid embarrassing mistake.  That mistake didn't have potential to cause injury, except my ego,  but it cost me a good bit of money to replace the special CVT fluid.

Since were admitting stupidity I can do better then that. My first polaris razor had about a 1000 miles on it and i was going to change the oil Opened the wrong drain and drained the trany and them dumped the 3 quarts of oil it callled for in it right on top of the 3 that were still there. My son in law showed up a couple hours later and wanted to borrow it. He took it home hopped in it and about 10 miles down the trail the tranny bearings locked up and completely trashed the tranny even the cases. Luckily it didnt catch on fire the cases were discolored from heat and there was oil blown all over the motor. Nothing like tossing 3k out the door.

Yes how could I forget. After I put the plug back in the cvt pan, I poured 4.8 quarts of new synthetic oil on top of the oil I never drained, so that was another 20 bucks. Lucky I did pull the oil dipstick and look before I drove the car.  When I pulled the oil dipstick and looked at the level, my first words were "What the Hell"?  After that I called myself many names not suitable to type here.

At the places I've worked we've had
vehicles towed in from wally world and
jiffy lube-you-up where they drained the
oil and put the plug back, but forgot
to refill it with fresh oil. Needless to
say, they didn't get far
Sad
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

think what goofed me up was the odd way polaris did it. There were two drain plugs under the machine and skid plates covering everything with two holes in them to access those plugs. Now why it is designed where the motor oil drain plug is in the rear and the tranny plug is in the front was beyond me until i actually paid attention to the fact the motor is behind the transmission. I even knew that but just wasnt thinking. On cars its always the other way. You would think that they would have marked it in some way though. But i guess you can dumb proof everything. Only one at fault was me.

My son put diesel in our gas fired commercial Skag ZTR Lawn Chariot before attempting to mow.  He chose a can, the wrong can, not marked, didn't ask, just assumed, and went with it.  That didn't play well in the engine.  Getting it drained was problematic.  After some coughing, sputtering, and smoke it ran OK.

I mistakenly put a flake IMR powder on top of a cylindrical IMR powder left in the powder measure after a session loading 223.  I walked away from the 223 session for a day or two and never unloaded the powder measure.  At the top of the Progressive Press, the measure "looked" as if it was empty, but there was still powder below the cast rim and below the sight glass.

The 357 Handi-rifle cartridges were pathetic!  The first and second to go "down range" went "pifffft", the cast boolit came out of the barrel, and I could SEE THEM going down range about 15 yards in a rainbow arc to the ground.  With a baseball glove, I could have caught one (don't try that at home).  I had no difficulty opening the action either time, so I loaded a third.

Hmmmmmmm......the brain cells were starting to wake up to the fact that something was amiss.  But being the FOOL that I am, I shot the third one.  The boolit barely passed the barrel, there was unburned powder from chamber to muzzle, which poured out like water, and was unmistakably two mixed powders (flake and cylindrical).  LESSON LEARNED.
