Lead is the primary bullet I have shot thru mine. Matter of fact I'm not sure anyone makes a jacketed bullet that is going to work in my M460 the cylinder is so short.

Hey guys,

i picked me up a 617 today.  its a real nice one, a little heavy trigger but nothing that wont smooth out i think.  i'm wondering though, is it ok to shoot lead through this gun since its ported?  what about other Taurus models that are ported?  does lead clog the ports up?  ported guns are new to me...

I have a 617SS non ported with which I am extremely pleased. I use it as my plain clothes gun and when I'm off duty. It is highly accurate and extemely smooth on the trigger pull. An exceptional value for the price.

Additionally I have a Stainless Mdl 669CP (Compensated & Ported) and lead in 357 really fouls the ports fast. To get all the lead busted loose I set up a home tumbler and fill it with Shooter's Choice® solvent. I strip the gun and place it in the tumbler & let it run all night. Next day I blow it out & dry it. Then I swab barrel, ports, & expansion chamber with a Lead Out® cloth & stainless brush & it's clean. Degease with GunScrubber®, reoil & it's done.

I have a S&W Mod 41 and lead will build up in the compensator, just requires periodic checking and cleaning.  It doesn't stick too hard, gas  temperatures at the muzzle are low enough that it doesn't form a good solder bond.
