Upcoming Alaska trip
« on: July 09, 2021, 11:52:17 AM »
Traveling to AK on the 28th. Arriving later that afternoon in Anchorage. Meeting up with one of my sons. Driving down to Soldotna to stay with some friends who have a home on the Kenai River. Me, walking with a cane at this point (spine surgery in August), the plan is to park me on a dock along the river with two rods (fly and spin) and let me fish through Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning. Then driving back to Anchorage with a cooler full of frozen salmon (hopefully full) and flying home.
This kind of scenario worked last time when we fished out of Anchorage on Bird creek. That was combat fishing but I could walk without a cane then. Looking forward to it all.

Enjoy your trip..and the fishing, but keep a sharp eye out.  Bears and eagles both enjoy fresh caught fish !  ;) ;D

Last time….we stopped along the highway to fish the Russian River. That involved a walk through a hundred yards or so of heavy brush and trees. It was spooky.

You sir are a lucky man! Enjoy, but stay safe. Your life is not worth a Salmon. Better to not argue with the bear, give up the fish and keep the life.

brother in law just came home with about 75lbs of halbut filets. He set me up with about 10bs on a swap for some venison. Good stuff! Im jealous. Had salt water salmon once and it was hands down better then the fresh water stuff.

And then, those of us that lived out there, wondered through the same places time after time without even giving it another thought.

I have to say, it was pretty entertaining when an outsider or townie would come down on the peninsula!  lol

DM: I am sure that what you say is true. There we were, though, tourist class. One reads the stories…..Kinda hard not to imagine. It ended well.

Yes. Good stuff. Check the price on wild caught Halibut. 75 lbs is enough to pay for the trip. And it tastes good.

My wife and family spent last weekend fishing the Kenai, too early to expect much results. I had to stay home and babysit the pool.

Just want to finish what I started. The Alaska trip was great fun. Only three days though we started at about 10a and fished till near 11p. My son knows a lot of folks who were kind enough to let us fish their part of the river. Easier for me as walking gets a bit harder each day (spinal surgery approaches…8/19).
It took me the better part of the first day to get a handle on the “kenai flip” once I did figure it out the fish started coming out of the water. Lots of fish...red salmon.

Glad you had a good time Pete, and will be praying for your next surgery on the 19th.

Very long story short, we're moving up that way in April, along the north Kenai River. Beautiful area isn't it?

TN:Very good to hear from you; it has been too long between hellos. Where will you be settling? We were staying with and fishing with friends in Soldotna.

Mule: I suspect that you would enjoy Alaska very much. We have a number of AK hands here on the forums

Pete, we will be in Cooper Landing; you probably drove past Wildman's and Gwinn's Lodge on Sterling Hwy on your way down from Anchorage. We'll be living along in there. Looking forward to mastering the Kenai flip!
