NEW OLD PISTOL--
« on: July 26, 2021, 10:58:32 AM »
I am posting on this page because the gun smith said this was based on a H&R gun. She is made by US Revolver co. 38 S&W. 3 1/4" barrel. No hammer.  # D2653x.  The more I look on line she looks like a Ivers & Johnston.  3rd gen?   From what I found  gens 1 and 2 were proofed for black powder. 3 for smokeless. Any idea what model this is?  What year "D" is.  Thanks.

On to of the rib it should say Iver Johnson Bicycle Works if it is an IJ. My great grandmother gave hers to my dad, he gave it to me, and last year, I gave it to my oldest boy.

She has become one of my most fun to shoot. With almost all powder hard to get I am loading her with Pyrodex or black. Pyrodex never went away and I don't mind getting her dirty.  I cast the bullets. Proper size for 38S&W is .361  but .359 will work and there is a lot of data for it.  Some day I will buy the .361 mold.

Where did you find cases at ?
All these people are saying that
"Well you should be able to cut
down 38 special cases.  . ."
Just me- a break top is already an
accident waiting to happen if you
don't pay attention to details, and
38spc is fairly different dimensionally
besides the length
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

I actually regret letting my boy have that old breakdown. About once a year I'd take it out and run a few rounds through it. It might even get some carry time.  8)

I like the old Scofield model smith's, and if I could afford the $1100.00 it takes to own a reproduction in 38 Special I'd buy one for edc.

Oh ok- thanks
I've checked before and they were out.
They're still showing to be out and no
backorder
Not a big deal. There'll be some turn up

A late friend of mine had a 38 S&W and
a 32. Carried one in each pocket.
Not sure what happened to his firearms
after he passed.
Probably ended up in a pawn shop for
ten cents on the dollar

Picked up two speed loaders and the pouch. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1015130341?pid=466721   38S&W  works fine in them. The rounds are short so I put filler in the pouch to lift them.

This cro-mee-um one is a 38S&W
I've shot it years ago with factory
lead bullet ammo. Not exactly sure
what I did with the empties, but it
was likely before I had an interest
in loading. I've always had a S&W
or a Detective Special or Model 10
or something else to use and
had a big metal box full of canvas
bank bags of once fireds at my
disposal

I picked up a box of new .38 S&W ammo at the lgs just a few months ago. I have three of them now: a S&W hammerless, an IJ break action hammer, and a solid frame Colt Police Positive. Don't shoot them often, but fun when I do. You can sometimes find brass or ammo on the internet. I have some hand loaded ammo I wouldn't be afraid to shoot in the Colt and I have fired factory in both break actions.
