The Navy has charged a sailor in connection with the massive fire that destroyed the USS Bonhomme Richard warship over four days in 2020 while docked off San Diego, a naval spokesman said Thursday.

The unidentified sailor was a member of the ship's crew and is accused of starting the July 12, 2020 blaze, the Navy said. The charges are based on evidence collected during an investigation, Navy spokesperson Cmdr. Sean Robertson, said in a statement.

"Evidence collected during the investigation is sufficient to direct a preliminary hearing in accordance with due process under the military justice system," Robertson said.

Vice Adm. Steve Koehler, commander of the U.S. Third Fleet, is considering court-martial charges. He has ordered a preliminary hearing at which an impartial hearing officer will make determinations and recommendations required by the Uniform Code of Military Justice, including "whether or not there is probable cause to believe an offense has been committed and to offer a recommendation as to the disposition of the case," the statement said.

Arson was suspected of causing the fire and a sailor was questioned, a senior defense official said weeks after the blaze.

The fire caused billions of dollars worth of damage on the amphibious assault ship, which raged over four days and was the Navy's worst U.S. warship fire outside of combat in recent memory.

The ship was eventually decommissioned. Repairing it would have cost $2.5 billion to $3 billion and take five to seven years, said Rear Adm. Eric H. Ver Hage of the Navy Regional Maintenance Center said at the time.

"We did not come to this decision lightly," said then-Secretary of the Navy Kenneth Braithwaite last year. "Following an extensive material assessment in which various courses of action were considered and evaluated, we came to the conclusion that it is not fiscally responsible to restore her."

I'm holding my opinion on this one.  Does anyone remember when the US Iowa battleship had an explosion in their #2, 16" gun turret?

Right off, the Navy tried to find some enlisted guy to blame the whole thing upon..

   https://taskandpurpose.com/news/iowa-explosion/

They even suggested a homosexual tie and other angles..but the truth did eventually emerge, leaving egg on some high ranking faces.

Having see certain things in the military, I'm holding on this !

Another was the sub in Maine that was severely damaged by a worker who wanted to get off early that day.

Need to see if it was something like this or a grudge against the Navy, or espionage.
Hold still while I overthink this.

Sorry to hear they are not going to repair the Bonnie Dick.  my Squadron was attached to the BD on it's last cruise as CVA 31 in 1970.  Note; wooden flight deck covered with non-skid.  The fact that it was decommissioned along with my squadron (change in aircraft requiring 14 months training) allowed me to get a 11 month early out.

Sometimes folks wonder how a big chunk of steel, such as a ship or tank can burn.  ....But it's no mystery to those who serve on them..
Sometimes big powers and moves, are stopped by seemingly trivial things!
The HMS Hood, may well have lasted the war out..except for the single round that hit the ammo storage area.

Some of our WW2 submarines were sunk by their own torpedoes..

The Bismark may have made it a few more nautical miles to safe cover of the Luftwaffe, had not that single torpedo from an outdated Swordfish a, not hit it's rudder.

...If only Col. Custer had waited for Gen Terry to join with his forces, before rushing headlong into trouble...
