Got to the range Jan 1, something I've done the last several years. Usually at a friend's club, they shoot some and then go in for food +. Trouble is if it's seasonal out they tend to not shoot much and run inside to stay cozy.

This year I went to my club which finished it's range expansion project and got to warm up a few rifles. Marlin 56 with open sights, got the windage squared away there. Jap Winchester 86 I bought too long ago and never fired, warmed it up with some 405 grain factory equivalent loads. Will spend a little more time with that soon. Lastly an AR, only fired a few rounds before heading out.

Range now has 280 yards, so I hope to get there 2x a month. Doesn't do any good to join and not use it.
Hold still while I overthink this.

I am halfway through a series of six matches - centerfire only - sponsored by my pistol league. This will be followed by six more…..45 only. Follow that with another half dozen based on International targets and rules. All indoors. Should take me safely into mid-Spring.

Well, it depends what you're going for. If to compete it may be a let down. But if to get out and just do it, cold, it may be interesting and fun. The competitive part will be there but you can allow for fumbles and because it's been 10 years, right?

I went to an indoor air pistol match 2 months ago after a similar length lay off. Did ok the first half and got tired the second half. Score was near the bottom. This is 60 shots plus sighters,  no practice other than to check my sights at home.

If I want to take it seriously I'll practice before attending the next one, 2 weeks out. If I practice and then do poorly that will be another story....

If I were going to shoot a competition match again, which I doubt will ever happen, I'd not consider myself to be competing to win but rather just enjoying the shooting. I'm sure these days I'd do terribly at it.

I'm not sure I could stand long enough to shoot the kind of matches I shot which were NRA silhouette matches. I've never shot those matches with semiautos where ya try to shoot fast. The matches I shot were long range precision competition.

I went to the range yesterday. It was a beautiful day with just a puff of wind now and then and the temp hit 70 degrees. I had a new AR 22 LR upper thanks to Santa Clause to sight in and evaluate plus a revolver that I had replaced the cheesy factory grips. The AR was a bust, fail to fire, fail to eject, no firing pin mark at all on some rounds. I will take it apart later today to see what I can find and run up the road where no one lives and do a quick function test. If no joy Santa will get it back to fix. The revolver was great. What a difference grips that are big enough to fit your hand make.

That will be all the shooting for me this week. The wind is already getting up and is supposed to be pretty high by this afternoon and continue until tomorrow night with the cold arriving tonight. I ran into one of the rimfire chicken shooters that I know at the range yesterday and he told me their first match of the year is tomorrow and he thought he would skip it as he didn't think he could take the wind chill of 30 degrees. I was surprised as he is really dedicated to the sport but he's in his 70's so I understand. Me? I'll stay in the house all day tomorrow except to run out and feed the birdies early tomorrow morning.

Hopefully I will get some shooting tomorrow.  We got about 8 inches of snow in Southern Minnesota and I'm going coyote hunting.

My problem Bill was i didnt really enjoy it. Im competitive and wasnt ever satisfied with my shooting. Even when id win first id critique my shooting. I was shooting one match (the last match i shot) and my wife was there. I was pissed off because of a poor score (to me) and was throwing things around and cussing and my wife asked me "why to you even do this. Every time ive been here your angry for half the time" I looked at her and said lets get the hell out of here. I never shot another match. She was right. The fun went away back when i was first shooting them and was improving every match. When i got to the point that i was either winning or at least taking second every match it became frustrating. Only time i smiled is when i shot a perfect score. crap happens and you just dont do that every time and at that point in the league if you didnt shoot a perfect score you didnt win period. Most times it ended in a shoot out between two or three guys. Found i have much more fun just shooting steel or rolling beer cans at my range. Or better yet taking one of the grandkids out and coaching them and watching them improve. Add to that its been over 5 years since i even practiced that type of shooting and i know if i shot id sure wouldnt be a happy camper. So the only real practice other then plinking i do is drills to help in a self defense situation like drawing a gun from various consealed carrys and engaging steel silhouettes. It was the same when i raced dirt bikes and snowmobiles and was the same when i played sports when i was young. Good enough just never seemed to be good enough.
