The first Christmas after all our kids were out on their own, my wife & I decided to spend Christmas over at the Musklareo Apache reservation. They have a very nice casino & hotel and several nice restaurants. We checks in and sat around a huge brass fireplace in the center of the common area. Watching the fire with a bunch of old people we didn’t know. Nobody said anything, just sat looking into the fire.
The casino was separate by a parking area and it didn’t escape me that armed security kept everything under surveillance. For two days we dined in their restaurants, walked the trails, watched their fires. Nobody was friendly or said a word that was not nesseary to conduct business.
When we left I asked Doris if she liked it. She said no. I agreed and we never went back to sit with the old folks and stare at the fire.
We did go back to preach in the reservation church on occasion.
