Anyone have a Savage AXIS rifle.
« on: August 19, 2021, 04:40:09 AM »
I’m looking at a new savage XP Bolt Action rifle package for my grandson for Christmas. Anyone own one? How do you like it?

I’m thinking the true timber camo synth ic stock model on sale for $259.97, in 223 caliber.

Can't use bolt actions, so I don't
have one myself.  Buddy's kids
have one each and as said ^ ^
they're tack drivers

I've owned and shot several. They have a cheap feel to them, but the out of the box accuracy is amazing. That's a heck of a price and you just can't go wrong with the .223 in my opinion.

I had one...  Accurate, but make sure you get one with accutrigger.  Mine was not an accutrigger model, had to have my grandson rework the trigger.  Other than that..great gun.

..But then so is the Ruger American.

Bought 2 of them yesterday. A 223 for me and a 243 to give my grandson for Christmas.

the one i bought was the standard cheap trigger. I did the clip one coil thing and it made it just barely shootable for a young kid but its nothing i let them shoot at 300 yards with a trigger like that. Actually at the price he paid a guy could buy timney triggers and still probaly come out ahead over an accutrigger and have a better trigger to boot.  Amazing what you can buy for under 250 bucks. When i was young the cheap entry level guns were the 94s and 336s and compare the price of those today to the axis, americans, atrs, ect and you could buy 2 or 3 for the same money as a lever gun.

I bought one of the early ones. Terrible trigger and generally cheesy rifle. Despite that it was pretty accurate. I never found the least bit of love for it and sold it.

I also bought a Savage 110. Cant argue with the trigger part. Terrible. But it could shoot right around an inch which I already knew from my uncles advice. He said it was a overlooked rifle that shot very well due to its free floated barrel but the trigger was terrible. I shot the pee out of that thing and got most of my money back when I sold it years later. There was no accutrigger back then that I’m aware of and Pastor. Your Grandson should love it.

I don't know exactly what my gunsmith grandson does to the triggers, but I know after he reworks them, they are as good as a Timney or Accutrigger.
I do know he either replaces or reworks the springs, plus he hones all bearing surfaces to a very smooth and fine tolerance.

I came into possession of my 2 axis rifles over the weekend. My 223 trigger breaks pretty clean, a little heavy on the pull. But for the price I’m a happy camper. Both rifles came with weaver 3X9 x40 scopes mounted on them. They claim there bore sited too.

I probably won’t do anything with the 243 until I give it to my grandson, and I got sidetracked onto a weekend of the wife’s projects she wanted done. But hopefully in the next week I’ll shoot the 223. I’m thinking the weaver is Asian mfg. so I’m not sure if it will stay on or not.

I've had several of the Japanese Weaver
scopes, and they were/are trouble free
and hold a zero.

Well I gave the grandson his new axis savage rifle in 243. Yesterday we took it to the barn and I fitted it to him. One nice feature is you can take the screws out of the recoil pad and remove a 2” spacer and then screw the recoil pad back on. Turns it into a youth stock.

Next I took the weaver 3x9x40 Chinese mfg scope off. The ring screws were so soft just taking them off made them unusable so I trashed them. The bases seemed good and solid. So I put a set of steel rings on and mounted the scope. Adjusted the eye relief and set up a target at 25 yards.

First shot was about 12” to the right and pretty good elevation. Moved the crosshairs left about 40 clicks left and shot again. After several more adjustments we moved out to 58 yards. The riflescope seemed to track as it should and the mounts were now solid so we fine tuned the scope dead center. Last three shots were off my shooting bench at 58 yards. And centered in the 2” bullseye.

I believe it will work. And for the price is hard to beat.

If you end up getting an Axis make sure it has an Accu-trigger, the first ones didn't and had that terrible trigger, I've got one in 25-06.
