Is the Taliban’s treatment of women really inspired by Sharia?

Meghan McCain has branded the U.S. a "laughing stock" after the Taliban mocked the iconic Iwo Jima flag-raising photo following President Joe Biden's controversial withdrawal from Afghanistan.

McCain on Wednesday night shared a video of her deceased father schooling a supporter who called former President Barack Obama an "Arab" after Trump supporters chanted "send her back" at his campaign rally in North Carolina.

Former The View co-host and conservative columnist McCain bemoaned the current situation in Afghanistan following the Taliban's capture of Kabul, which brought the country firmly under its control.

In a post to her more than 790,660 Twitter followers on Saturday, McCain wrote: "We're the laughing stock of the world."

She included her comment alongside a tweet by U.S. political commentator Clay Travis which showed Taliban fighters raising their flag in a similar way to when American forces declared victory in the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.

In his tweet, Travis said: "The Taliban dressed up in American military gear we left behind when we fled the country and staged their own mock Iwo Jima photo."

The Taliban photo itself shows four Taliban fighters appearing in combat uniform, complete with night vision goggles, raising the white flag of the Islamist militant group.

According to branding on the photo, the fighters in the photo were from the Badri 313 Battalion, although this was not immediately confirmed.

The group is understood to have taken its name from the Battle of Badr where the Prophet Muhammad led an army of 313 soldiers and defeated a larger Quraysh force in modern-day Saudi Arabia.

McCain, daughter of former Republican Presidential candidate and Vietnam War veteran John McCain, has previously shared her distaste for President Biden's actions over the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

On Thursday, McCain said she was "furious with our President" in an Instagram post shared with her 477,000 followers on the platform.

She later added: "The shame, dishonor and embarrassment the Biden administration has brought to our country will take generations to undo. Not to mention our standing in the world and the cruel reality that the likelihood of another significant domestic terror attack has now risen to the highest levels since 9/11 and will usher in ISIS 3.0."

Trump, GOP And Democrat Politicians Call On Biden To Resign Over Afghanistan Crisis

President Biden has come under heavy criticism for his handling of the U.S. pull-out from Afghanistan.

But he has strongly defended his decision despite the rapid takeover of the country by the Taliban.

He also appeared to cast doubt on the willingness of government forces to stand and fight against the Taliban.

Justifying his decision, Biden said in an address to the nation on Friday: "The overwhelming consensus was that they were not going to collapse - the Afghan forces. They were not going to leave.

"They were not going to just abandon and then put down their arms and take off."

Newsweek has contacted the White House for comment.
