Williams FP sights on the Buffalo Classic
« on: March 08, 2004, 05:06:22 AM »
I finally got to go shoot my BC with the Williams FP rear sight I
ordered from NEF/H&R. It worked great. All I did was screw it on
and was hitting on paper at 50 yards. A little windage adjustment
was required (when I was finished, the O.D. of the aperture was
exactly in line with the width of the hammer). Then I adjusted for
elevation for a 100 yard zero.

The rifle was shooting clover leafs at 100 yards using standard
store-bought Remington 405gr.

Then I decided to get an idea of how far out the sight will take me.

I am using a Lyman 17AHB on the front, the lowest possible at .404".

Setting the Rear sight to its maximum setting, that is as high as it
has markings, it looked like the point of impact at 100 yards was
about 5-1/2 feet (66 inches) over the point of aim. Based on the
Remington ballistics calculator, this should allow for zeroing the
rifle at 500 yards, maybe 600 given the fact we might be getting a
little more velocity out of our longer barrels and it might be
possible to set the sight a little higher than the markings indicate.

After I did that, I reset to a 100 yard zero by using the markings
on the sight and tested it and, sure enough, the zero was back.

I'm very happy with the FP on the BC.

Liberty Ship:

Sounds like you got a winning combination there.Let us know how it does when you get a chance to shoot at the longer ranges.

Using the low 17A, did the 100 yard zero give you any remaining downward adjustment on the Williams? My BC has one of the taller 17A's on it and I am trying to figure out whether to go ahead and order the lower version or live with a peep set fairly high to get a 100 yard zero.

Libertyship, thanks for reporting back. I have the medium height front sight, so may need the lower one, but if I can get out to 500yds that will be all I need.

I have been on the Jeremiah O'Brien, and was suprised how quiet the old girl was. Amazing

Libertyship,
I'm glad your happy with the sight, I may follow your lead on this. The factory issued sight is fine for deer, but for target or long range, it just don't cut it. I would feel bad putting a scope on the BC, but my eyes ain't what they once were, and this Williams FP may be a help.

Yes.  There was room to go down from the 100 yard zero.  I had it set as low as possible for my first shot to get it on paper at 50 yards.  Had to go up a little to zero at 50, had to go up a little more for the zero at 100.

I envy you.  I've never been on a Liberty Ship, but I mean to one day.  My father was assigned to them as an Army Transportation Corps officer during WWII and made quite a few North Atlantic crossings, including the Murmansk run and a few runs through Gibralter.  He's dead now and I thought it would be a good name to use in his memory on these freedom loving gun boards.

To answer the question of how low will the FP go on the BC, I just looked at mine which is sighted in for 100 yards.

The sight is marked off with 20 marks (4 groups of 5) with #1 being the lowest and #20 being the highest.  When sighted in for 100 yards with a Lyman 17AHB front sight, the Williams FP rear sight is set at #4.  So there is room for it to go down.   When set at #20, it hits about 5-1/2 feet high at 100 yards.

Hope this helps.
