It is pretty country. The town is kind of on standby this time of year. My wife and I used it as a vacation base in October twice until a couple of years ago but she can't take the elevation anymore. Both years we rented a condo for less money than staying in a motel and had it all to ourselves. 42 units and we were the only occupants. We would eat breakfast in a little place called Yesterdays that had really good food and then hit the road sightseeing and taking pictures. I got some good fall foliage pictures on our last trip. Lazy me didn't back them up and lost every one of them in a hard drive failure. I wonder if the cafe made it through the so called pandemic?

Almost completely as far south as you can get from Red River and still be in NM it is the same temperature this morning and we are at only half the altitude. We had a real rip snorter yesterday. Wind was predicted to hit 50 and it made it to 54. Weatherguesser says it will be higher tomorrow at 60 mph.

I agree with Dee that it is a tourist trap but there aren't many ways to make a living in northern NM but that. The real tourist trap is west at Questa. There is a little junk store there and he had a sign sayning exactly that beside the entrance. Nice guy and I got some good books from him on our last trip. He gives them away. Yep, free books. I wonder if it is still going after our excuse for a governor shut the state down.

We came intentionally in the off season. Used to come here several times a year until about 30 years ago.
Were in Questa yesterday, considering Taos today.
Linda is apprehensive about Taos, I got into a physical disagreement about 30 years ago with 4 local Indians about their nasty mouths in front of women.
I don't think they liked tourists.

Taos is the real tourist trap in my opinion. We made a day there two years ago and everyone we encountered was friendly and pleasant. Gotta get those tourist dollars. My wife even spent a lot of time with the owner  of one shop after they discovered they were both quilters. I looked over everything in the place and then went outside and leaned on the wall and watched other tourists while the quilting gab was going on. We just piddled around looking and the only things we bought were food and gasoline. I have never understood why people think Taos is such a fantastic place to visit.

We went to the little strip of stores that had the silver handmade jewelry. My trouble happened at a pedestrian crossing the Indians were sitting at the red light.
Everybody else was really friendly.

Went to Taos today and old Taos downtown has changed since we were there 30 years ago.
Due to Linda's COPD this will probably be our last visit to the Red River area. She said she didn't want to come back anymore.
Saw these between Questa and Red River on the way back to Red River.

Beautiful contrast between the pines and I'm guessing aspen trees?

Yes it is beautiful for sure.
Probably won't be too long before
somebody buys it and has
everything bulldozed to throw
up a mini mansion, and uses up the
water watering the new lawn
and running the dishwasher and
washing machine and all the
family taking 45 minute showers
etc.
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

My years in New Mexico were some of the best I’ve had. Elk season and the aspens Turing gold colored in October along with abundant mushrooms growing wild. I sure looked forward to pulling my horses up to the willow creek trailhead. Packing up and heading into the Gila wilderness for a couple of weeks.

It is pretty up here, but liberal. There is a mask mandate that some businesses ignore, and some businesses are rabid enforcers.
If you want a hamburger, be prepared to pay 30 bucks for 2.
Linda wanted lasagna at a small restaurant. 60 bucks for 2.
With Linda's COPD I am thankful to be seeing Red River NM for the last time.

I would bet you saw those at Goat Hill. I don't know if the sign is still there or not. I got some pictures of them on our last trip and one old gal walked out from the others and stood there like she was posing for me. I lost those pictures in the hard drive failure also.
