Best bait for squirrels
« on: November 14, 2021, 04:57:29 AM »
We have a continual battle with squirrels and I have been controlling them in the past with my 22 cal pellet rifle. I have one that has proved to be smarter than the others and I can't get a shot at him.

I have a live catch trap and was wondering what the best bait would be to try to catch him?

Thanks

Peanut butter works on some.  A shotgun works even better.

Ive  trapped a lot of critters but I dont remember ever trapping a squirrel .  , Probably easier to trap one in the back yard than out in the wilderness . Peanut butter like mentioned above would be my first choice thats what I use in mouse traps . If they are robbing the bird feeder you could try a ear of corn .

My daughter feeds them peanuts. Enough that they chitter at her if she "forgets" to put some out. We had some cans that we kept so long they got rancid, but the squirrels don't seem to care.

If I'm using any bait,  peanut butter
as posted ^ ^ ^ is the best I've found.
Where I have the traps I have out I
found a couple of established "runs "
or pathways and I just set 110's and
they've produced better than the ones
I've used baited in the past
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

I bought a squirrelinator live trap from Rural King, figured it was worth a try.  A church was built next door and they cut a mess of trees so they all came over to mine.  I baited the trap with chicken scratch, a little on the outside and around it and a pile in the middle.  Captured about 20 of them in about three weeks.

I've caught squirrels set for cats. They went in wanting the cat food.  I think peanut butter will solve your problem.

Appreciate everyone's advice, the live catch trap is now baited with fresh peanuts and peanut butter spread over a partial ear of corn. I also had a rat trap that I attached to the trunk of our pear tree and baited it with peanut butter.

Fingers crossed one or the other will work.
