pet 300 Win Load?
« on: March 09, 2004, 02:28:13 AM »
Hey guys,
just ordered the new powder packs from hogdon with the four different powders.   I ordered one of the target packs and one of the magnum rifle packs.  Can't wait to try out some new powders.  It works great for me cause i can't afford to buy a pound of powder only to discover my gun dosen't like it, so this is the answer.

just wanted to know what your favorite load for the 300 Win was.  And also if anybody has had any experience with tthe 200 grain GameKings. I got some on order  and am planning on using them for  moose and black bear.  I am thinking that a 300 Win should have no trouble with the 200 grainers, am i correct?

So long for now

200 gr GK's will work well in the 300 Win Mag. I use IMR powder, so I can't help you with a pet load in hodgon powder.

I love IMR and H 4831 for my 300 win mag.  Just ran some tests the other day with some 180 gr Barnes X flat base using 71, 72, 73 gr H 4831.  Velocities were a bit low -  a little over 2800 fps - but fantastic accuracy at 100 yds - .75 to 1 inch.  Now I have to see if I can up the velocity while maintaining accuracy.  May try the coated flat base or triple shock next.

My pet load has been 72.5 to 73 gr of IMR 4831, CCI mag rifle or Fed 215 primer, Rem cases avg wt 235-238 gr/case with 180 gr Noslers Partitions, or Speer Hot core.  It gets about 2900-2950 fps at 50 degrees F  24 inch barrel.  I can get more velocity but this combo has put down close to 20 caribou and a couple moose. I'd say my long term avg group size is 1.25 at 100 yds and from the bench.  Note my gun was chambered by H-S Precision and allows a much longer OAL than the factory ammo.  It lets Nosler partitions be seated to about 3.45 to even 3.55 OAL. So if you must seat your bullets deeper to chamber in your gun approach my loads carefully.

H 4831 can work just as well but you need a grain or two more to get the same velocity- check the books.  I can get more velocity with the IMR than with the H - I think I have reached over 3,000 fps with the IMR but choose to keep velocity down a little for accuracy and less meat damage.

From my observations of other guys using Sierra bullets on caribou, I'll stay with Nosler Partitions, especially if moose are in the picture.  I've had very good performance with the Hot Cores too and that surprised me but I'm happy with em.  I don't choose to use them on moose though. My rifle doesn't seem to like Hornady 180s for some reason.  Haven't tried Balistic tips.  For practice the bulk Rem Cor Loks work ok.

Sierras are wonderfully accurate - I've burned up a lot of the 168 and 165 grainers in this gun but I've always felt the caribou I shot were more certainly anchored than the ones my friends shot with Sierras.  I abandoned 165 gr bullets (Speer grand slam and Nosler Part) at about 3100+ fps due to excessive meat damage.

I am exploring the Barnes X and Failsafe bullets in 180 as they might be a little better if I stumble onto a brown bear.

I have gotten good results with the 4350 powders but like the slightly slower burning of the 4831s.  You might want to look at Reloader 19 and 22 as well but they aren't available to me so I have tried them.

I shoot a Remington Sendero 300 WM that Nosler 200 gr Accubonds are simply awesome. 71.5 gr of RL-22 chronographed at 2950 and <1.0 at 200 yds. Only work done on rifle was Timney trigger. This load has been been good in a 700 ADL as well. I am trying the 180 Accubonds in a couple weeks so I'll post up when I can. The Accubonds have a great BC as well so if you intend to reach out so it can sustained velocity better.

I've used H4831 with Nosler 200 gr Partitions in my Ruger 300WM with good results.  Here's data:

i use 73.5 grains IMR 4350 and 165 grain Nosler BT. the best group i have ever shot with this load from my Rem BDL was just under a half inch with 4 shots. that was looking through a 4.5-14X40 VX-III....

:D Hey there 22Savage,

This is just IMHO, but I haven't seen Reloader 22 listed by anyone, and I think that is a mistake.

In my 26" A-Bolt, I am seeing 3200 - 3300fps with a 165gr Nosler Partition and 79grs. of the Reloader 22.

The velocity/pressures will depend on the lot # of the powder, but R22 IS a good one.

Keep em coming!

I am using 70 gr. of IMR4350 with WLRM primers under Barnes 165 gr. XBT. Extremely accurate load in my Tikka 300 Win Mag.  :D

I used 75.5 gr of rl 22 with 180 gr noslers. That load would nearly cut a ragged hole at 100 yds. Worked fine on a couple of caribou in Quebec 6 years ago. I also used 76 gr of rl 19 with a Barnes 165 X. Good accuracy and it flattened a nice 8 pt Wi whitetail in 97. I haven't used 200 gr bullets yet, but when I hunt elk/moose I'll use some with rl 22.
